Mountain Hawks drop Saturday doubleheader to Navy

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team fell victim to the hot-hitting Navy bats Saturday as the Mids captured a 4-0 win in game one and a 21-1 victory in game two to sweep a Saturday doubleheader at Legacy Park. Navy takes over sole possession of first place in the Patriot League and moves to 10-4 in league play, while Lehigh falls to 7-7.
Junior Mike Garzillo tallied two hits on the day to lead Lehigh, including his fifth home run of the season.
The Mids put up three runs in the top of the first inning of the day's first game thanks to a double from Stephen Born, an Adrian Chinnery single and a Lehigh error. Lehigh senior starter J.R. Edwards retired the next five batters he faced until Born sent a solo home run over the right field fence to give Navy a 4-0 lead.
Navy starter Luke Gillingham was cruising until senior Justin Pacchioli drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth inning. Garzillo followed with a single through the left side, but Gillingham was able to get a strikeout and a groundout to get out of trouble.
Lehigh wasn't able to get anything else off Gillingham, who finished with a line of one hit and 11 strikeouts in seven innings to earn the win. Edwards suffered the loss after allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits in seven innings.
Navy's bats came to life in game two, putting up crooked numbers in the first four innings to take a 15-0 lead before a Garzillo home run in the bottom of the fourth put a Lehigh run on the board. Freshman Michael Schwab kept Navy off the board in the sixth inning and classmate Frank Rosetti did the same in the ninth, but Navy was able to capture a 21-1 victory.
Navy starter George Coughlin threw seven one-run innings to earn the win, while Lehigh senior starter Nick Macaione suffered the loss.
Lehigh and Navy wrap up their four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader slated to begin at noon. Free video of both games will be available on the Patriot League Network.
