Lehigh holds off Holy Cross 4-3 to win rubber game of series

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh softball team raced to an early 4-0 lead and held off a Holy Cross comeback attempt to defeat the Crusaders 4-3 Sunday in the final game of a three-game series at Freshman Field.

The Mountain Hawks scored three runs in the first and one in the second to take the early lead while the Crusaders answered with two in the bottom of the second and cut the lead to one in the fifth before senior Emily Bausher came on in relief to shut the door and earn the save.

With the victory, Lehigh improves to 26-6 overall and 10-1 in the Patriot League. Holy Cross falls to 4-10 overall and 3-6 in the league.

Lehigh's three first inning runs came via RBI from junior Jessica Calvini, senior Emma Capetz and junior Carissa Zito as the Mountain Hawks capitalized on two Crusader errors.

In the second, junior Morgan Decker singled to right field with two outs and scored on a triple to right by sophomore Vicky Lattanzio.

Holy Cross answered with two runs off sophomore Christine Campbell in the bottom of the second on a RBI triple by Emma Keough and a run-scoring single by Abigail Lang.

A fifth-inning RBI single from Emily Jarvis scored Sarah Kane to bring the Crusaders within one, but Bausher came on in relief to strike out Emily Krisanda to end the fifth.

Bausher worked around a hit batter in the sixth and retired the Crusaders in order in the seventh to claim her first save of the season.

Campbell earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings of work to improve to 11-2 on the season.

Katy Watson took the loss for Holy Cross, allowing two earned runs in four innings.

Lehigh outhit Holy Cross 10-6 but left eight runners on base. Lattanzio, Capetz and freshman Nicole Yozzo led the Mountain Hawks with two hits apiece.

The Mountain Hawks will next head to Princeton for a Wednesday non-league doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for 3 p.m. Lehigh will be off from league play next weekend but will make up the final game of its series against Boston University on Friday.
