BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With less than a month of regular season competition remaining, the Lehigh softball team will play five games this week, including four non-league games in the Mountain Hawks' scheduled week off from Patriot League play. Lehigh begins the week four wins shy of its 15th consecutive 30 win season as the Mountain Hawks square off against Princeton, Patriot League rival Boston University, and UMBC.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 2-3 week in which they were swept in a doubleheader by a tough Hofstra squad and then went on the road to win two of three games at Holy Cross to improve to 26-6 on the season. At 10-1 in the Patriot League, Lehigh is tied with Colgate in the loss column for first place in the league standings, but the Mountain Hawks own two more victories than the Raiders.
Freshman Nicole Yozzo batted .474 last week (9-for-19) to lead Lehigh offensively. She is now hitting .434 for the season which is second to junior Alexis Watanabe's .468 for tops on the team. Junior Jessica Calvini continues to lead the team in RBI with 23.
Senior Emily Bausher had a strong week in the pitcher's circle despite a 1-2 won-loss record. Bausher recorded 30 strikeouts in 22.1 innings of work and did not allow an earned run in 15.1 innings against Holy Cross. She pitched a two-hit shutout in the series opener and earned the save in the series finale.
Lehigh will begin competition this week against Princeton on Wednesday in New Jersey. The Tigers are looking to extend their four game winning streak, which has them in a tie at the top of the Ivy League South Division with Penn. Princeton stands at 14-18 on the season, but is 6-0 at Class of 1895 Field including a four-game sweep of Columbia over the weekend.
Princeton head coach Lisa (Sweeney) Van Ackeren '09 will face her alma mater for the second time in three years as the Tigers' head coach. One of Lehigh's most decorated softball alumna, Van Ackeren is the only Patriot League player in history to win four Pitcher of the Year Awards. In 2008, the New Jersey native also captured the Player of the Year award. Van Ackeren holds school and Patriot League records for career wins (104), shutouts (31) and strikeouts (928) and guided Lehigh to three NCAA Regional appearances and had hand in Lehigh's five NCAA wins from 2006-09.
The Tigers lead the all-time series against Lehigh 30-15 but the Mountain Hawks swept doubleheaders in 2012 and 2013. Last year's scheduled twinbill was rained out.
Following its doubleheader at Princeton, Lehigh will return home to face Boston University in a single game on Friday at Kafuman Field. The Terriers are just 8-23 on the season and 1-7 in the league after dropping three games to Army over the weekend.
Friday's game is the make-up from the single game that was postponed on March 22. The March 21 doubleheader was made up on April 1 with Lehigh posting 9-1 and 11-1 five-inning wins against the defending Patriot League champions and preseason favorite.
The single game will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday with audio available at Lehighsports.com.
Lehigh will conclude the week with a Saturday doubleheader at UMBC, which holds a 17-14 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the America East. The Retrievers are led by freshman Tori Alexander, who earned her second straight America East Rookie of the Week award with a team-leading .812 slugging percentage. Alexander's strong slugging percentage was accompanied by a .438 batting average and nine RBIs. UMBC will play non-league doubleheaders with La Salle and South Carolina State before Lehigh visits on Saturday. The Retrievers have won four of the six previous meetings, including a 3-0 win in the most recent meeting in 2008.
Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. from Baltimore. Next week Lehigh is scheduled for five home games as the Mountain Hawks will face Villanova on April 22 and will welcome Army for three key Patriot League games April 25-26.
