BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After a hard-fought loss at Loyola, the Lehigh men's lacrosse team returns home to host Bucknell on Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks used a big third quarter to even the score at Loyola, but the Greyhounds held a 3-0 edge in the fourth quarter to come out with the 11-8 victory.
Senior Dan Taylor continued his impressive play, having a hand in four of Lehigh's eight goals. He finished with three goals and one assist to reach 98 goals in his career. Senior Kurtis Kaunas scored two goals while classmate Alan Henderson had three points (one goal, two assists). Kaunas scored just 49 seconds into the game, but Loyola came right back with the next two. Lehigh wouldn't lead the rest of the game, but fought back several times to tie the score at two, three then eight. The Greyhounds used a 3-0 run to take a 6-3 lead at the half, but the Mountain Hawks outscored Loyola 5-2 in the third quarter to make it 8-8 after 45 minutes of play.
Taylor's goals evened the score at two, three then pulled his squad within 8-7 in the third quarter. He then assisted on junior Billy Oppenheimer's game-tying extra man goal just 38 seconds later. Defensively, junior Casey Eidenshink tallied five groundballs and a caused turnover while senior Lukas Mikelinich had a groundball and two caused turnovers. Junior Corey Eppley finished with career highs in both groundballs (3) and caused turnovers (2). Senior Matt Poillon was sensational in goal for a second straight week, tallying a season-high 16 saves including six in the third quarter (allowing just two goals) as Lehigh made its comeback attempt. Despite Loyola controlling possession, the Mountain Hawks held the Greyhounds to 11 goals which marked their second fewest this season (in their first five games).
Possession was the story of the game as Loyola won 16-of-21 faceoffs. Lehigh tried five different players at the faceoff X, but none could win more than one draw. That possession led the Greyhounds to a 47-29 edge in shots. Last Saturday was a rematch of the 2014 Patriot League Championship Game.
The loss was only Lehigh's fifth in its last 29 Patriot League games, three coming to Loyola. Saturday was the closet margin, however, as the Mountain Hawks played neck-and-neck with the defending league champions and a program that's made three straight NCAA Tournaments. Through two league games, the Patriot League looks to be wide open this season as Colgate is 2-0 while five other teams are 1-1. Lehigh and Saturday's opponent Bucknell are two of those 1-1 teams.
Bucknell is 2-2 early in its season, beating nationally-ranked Bryant and Navy while falling to Delaware and Colgate. Each of the Bison's four games so far has been decided by two goals or fewer. Ryan Joseph leads the team in scoring with 12 points (nine goals, three assists) while freshman Will Sands has 11 points (six goals, five assists). Sean Doyle (seven goals, one assist) and Thomas Flibotte (four goals, four assists) each have eight points apiece. Alex Spring leads the defense with eight caused turnovers to go with a team-leading 19 groundballs. Sam Grinberg has played almost every minute in goal, owning a 8.22 goals against average and .556 save percentage.
The Lehigh and Bucknell series has been extremely streaky as the Mountain Hawks have won four in a row immediately after the Bison had won six straight. The streak began with a hard-fought 9-8 win in Lehigh's 2012 Patriot League Championship season, included an 11-7 road win to clinch the #1 overall seed in 2013, continued with an 11-5 Patriot League Championship Game victory later this season and included a 9-3 road victory at Bucknell last season. The four straight victories have pulled the Mountain Hawks within 33-14 in the all-time series.
The Mountain Hawks return to action at #19 Villanova on Tuesday (7 p.m.) before heading to Navy next Saturday (Mar. 14).
