Mountain Hawks open Patriot League play against Army this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team begins the race for a league championship this weekend when the Mountain Hawks kick off Patriot League play against Army. The four-game series will be played at Bucknell's Depew Field and doubleheaders will begin at 12 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. As with all league series, the first contest of the doubleheaders will be seven innings, while the second will be a full nine-inning affair.
Lehigh and Army will be meeting for the first time since last season's Patriot League semifinal series. The third-seeded Mountain Hawks won a three-game series at No. 2 Army with a 6-0 win in game one and 3-1 victory in game three to earn a spot in last season's Patriot League championship series. The two teams split the regular-season series at Army a season ago.
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to build upon Wednesday's 17-5 win at Coppin State. Lehigh exploded for a season-high 21 hits, including eight extra-base hits, en route to the victory. All nine Mountain Hawk starters registered a hit, including six players who had multiple-hit efforts, as sophomore Jacen Nalesnik led the way with a career-high six RBI.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Mike Garzillo leads Lehigh and the Patriot League with a .446 batting average and a .738 slugging percentage to go along with his team-best 21 RBI and 12 extra-base hits. The junior's batting average ranks ninth in all of Division I while his slugging percentage is 12th-best in the nation. Senior Justin Pacchioli follows Garzillo with a .377 batting average and leads the team in runs scored (20) and stolen bases (13). Nalesnik (12) and junior Anthony Rinaldi (11) have also tallied double-digit RBI.
Senior J.R. Edwards is projected to get the starting nod in game one this weekend. Edwards leads the team with a 2.08 ERA and leads all of Division I in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (2.60). Nick Macaione, who threw a nine-inning no-hitter in his first appearance this season, will start game two. Freshman Peter Moore gets the nod in game three after a strong outing against Rider Tuesday in which he struck out eight batters and allowed just one run on one hit in five innings of work. Lehigh's game four starter is to be determined.
The Black Knights carry a 10-9 overall record into this weekend's series and have lost five of their last six games. Army was able to salvage the final game in a four-game series against Harvard last weekend before dropping a 13-10 contest at Colombia Wednesday. Mark McCants leads the Black Knights with a .351 batting average and 21 RBI. Kris Lindner follows with a .343 mark and team-best 16 runs scored. Army is hitting .273 as a team compared to its opponents' average of .248.
Alex Robinett leads Army with a 2.08 ERA and will get the start in game one against the Mountain Hawks. Robinett has struck out a team-best 37 batters and holds a 3-2 record. Freshman lefty Jeremy Mortensen is the projected game two starter and holds a 1-1 record with a 3.13 ERA, while Julian Larimer (0-1, 3.07 ERA) will toe the rubber in game three. Army's game four starter is also TBD. Johnny Griffith (1-0, 0.69 ERA) and Matt Ball (2-0, 1.80 ERA) have been two key relievers for the Black Knights so far this season.
Following this weekend's series, Lehigh will head to Delaware for the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic Tuesday. The Mountain Hawks are then scheduled to host defending champion Bucknell in a four-game set next weekend.
