Garzillo named PL Player of the Week as Lehigh faces schedule changes this week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball junior Mike Garzillo has been named the Patriot League Player of the Week, as announced by the league Monday afternoon. Garzillo and the Mountain Hawks will play Rider in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic Tuesday at La Salle's DeVincent Field before traveling to Coppin State Wednesday at 3 p.m. First pitch against Rider will be at 2:15 p.m. Lehigh's Patriot League opening series against Army this weekend will be played at Bucknell's Depew Field due to unplayable field conditions at the Goodman Campus Baseball Field.
Garzillo batted .455 (5-for-11) with two home runs, six RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in Lehigh's three games last week. The Wind Gap, Pa. native went 3-for-5 with four RBI, a home run and a double at Delaware Tuesday. He followed with a 2-for-6 effort in a Sunday doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson with another home run and two RBI. Garzillo leads the Patriot League with a .441 batting average and .746 slugging percentage for the season. His batting average ranks seventh in all of Division I, while his slugging percentage sits tenth-best in the nation.
Senior J.R. Edwards earned honorable mention status for the Patriot League Pitcher of the Week award after allowing just one hit over seven innings in Lehigh's 2-1 loss at Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday. He threw 6.2 no-hit innings before surrendering a two-run home run as his only hit allowed while fanning four Knights batters.
The Mountain Hawks' games against Rider and Coppin State will serve as the final tune-ups before league play begins this weekend against Army. Besides his league-best batting average and slugging percentage, Garzillo also leads the Mountain Hawks with 18 RBI and seven doubles. Senior Justin Pacchioli follows with a .353 batting average and a team-best 15 runs scored and ten stolen bases.
Rider carries a 3-11 overall record into Tuesday's matchup and will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The Broncs most recently dropped a pair of games at Ohio State last Tuesday (6-2) and Wednesday (7-2). Jake Bender leads the team with a .308 batting average, followed by Justin Thomas (.291) and Brian Uliana (.286). James Locklear has recorded a team-best seven RBI, while Nick Richter leads the squad with seven runs scored. David Hafer has earned all three of Rider's wins on the mound and holds a perfect 0.00 ERA. Eric Thomas has secured three saves.
Lehigh and Rider last met in 2013 when the Broncs pulled out a 6-4 victory.
Coppin State is 1-15 on the season and will face George Washington Tuesday before hosting Lehigh Wednesday. The Eagles have lost their last 11 games and their lone win of the season was a 4-3 victory over Army on March 7. George Dragon leads the team with a .356 batting average and is followed by John Kraft (.274) and Colin Dower (.265). Kraft has tallied a team-best 11 RBI and Dower has scored a team-leading 11 runs. Dillon O'Brien leads the squad with a 3.75 ERA and Anderson Burgess earned the team's win against Army.
The Mountain Hawks were victorious in all three games they played at Coppin State a season ago. Lehigh swept a doubleheader (9-3, 8-2) in March before earning a 4-3, ten-inning victory on April 22. The Mountain Hawks are 16-1 all-time against the Eagles.
Following the two midweek games, Lehigh will open up Patriot League play against Army this weekend with doubleheaders scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
