Rider rallies past Lehigh in Liberty Bell Classic

PHILADELPHIA – Rider scored eight runs in the final three innings to capture a 9-4 win over the Lehigh baseball team Tuesday afternoon at La Salle's DeVincent Field in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic. Freshman starter Peter Moore allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters through five innings while junior Mike Garzillo led Lehigh offensively with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.

Moore sat down the Broncs in order with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first. Senior Justin Pacchioli led off the bottom of the first with a single before stealing second and going to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore David Young was hit by a pitch before Garzillo roped a two-out double to right field to score Pacchioli. Sophomore Patrick Donnelly followed with a bases-clearing triple to center before junior Anthony Rinaldi recorded an RBI groundout to give the Mountain Hawks an early 4-0 lead.

Moore recorded another 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts in the top of the second before the Broncs got a run back in the third on an RBI single from Nick Richter. It would be the only hit Rider would get off Moore, who finished his strong outing with a line of one run on one hit with a career-high eight strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work.

Rider starting pitcher Kurt Sowa kept Lehigh off the board through the rest of his outing to keep the Broncs in reaching distance. Rider's Greg Fazio drew a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh before stealing second and eventually coming home on a Lehigh throwing error. A sacrifice fly from Eric Strano followed to help the Broncs narrow Lehigh's lead to 4-3.

The Broncs took the lead in the seventh inning when a Lehigh throwing error scored the tying run before a sacrifice fly plated the go-ahead run. Rider added two more runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to capture the 9-4 victory.

Junior Kevin Boswick suffered the loss while Sowa earned the win.

The Mountain Hawks return to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. when Lehigh heads to Coppin State.
