
Mountain Hawks rally in singles play for 5-2 win over Villanova

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team opened up a three-match home stand with a 5-2 victory over Villanova Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks were swept in three doubles matches but battled back to win five singles matches, including a pair of three set wins, to improve to 6-5 on the season.
The visiting Wildcats (2-9) started strong by sweeping the doubles matches. Paulina Bajet and Linley Busby beat sophomore Cassidy Cruz and freshman Kirstin Godau 8-5 at No. 3 singles and then Villanova's top team of Tori Smyth and Victoria Martinez clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over sophomore Jamie Campisi and freshman Christina Auyeung.
Auyueng sparked Lehigh's rally in singles by opening with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Smyth at the top flight. Freshman Briana Maravich then gave Lehigh a 2-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alexandra Krogius at No. 4 singles.
The matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles went to three sets with Cruz holding off Martinez 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 flight and Campisi clinching the match for the Mountain Hawks with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Samantha Schafer at No. 3 singles.
Senior Abby Farrell added a straight set win over Kate Pettee at No. 6 singles while Villanova took the match at No. 5 singles in a ten point tiebreak.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday March 29 when they open Patriot League play against Navy. The match is set for an 11 a.m. start from the Lewis Tennis Center.
