EASTON, Pa. - The Lehigh women's lacrosse team ended the game with seven of the last eight goals to turn a three-goal lead into a runaway 15-6 victory over archrival Lafayette on a chilly Wednesday evening in Easton. Sophomore Lauren Beausoleil led the Mountain Hawks' offense with a career-high four goals while junior Kendall Garden tallied two goals, one assist, three groundballs and three caused turnovers. With the win, Lehigh improves to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in Patriot League play.
"I think we played well and I think we played hard for two full halves, which is a key to what we need to do going forward," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "I think we played together. I'm so proud of our seniors, who really delivered great games."
Sophomore Allison LaBeau added three goals for her third hat trick of the season while classmate Krista Dampman scored twice as well. Along with Beausoleil's goal total, she added three groundballs, five draw controls and a caused turnover.
"I really thought we ran hard, we went to goal hard and we trusted each other with the ball," said Redfern.
Beausoleil opened the scoring with 27:05 left in the first half before senior defender Kelly Scott scored her second goal in the last three games. After the Leopards pulled within one, the Mountain Hawks answered with two straight goals to go up four after freshman Haley Wentzel made it 5-1 with 19:48 on the clock.
The Leopards answered with the next two to pull within 5-3, but the Mountain Hawks scored three of the last four first-half goals, including two straight from Dampman, to take an 8-4 lead at the half.
Lafayette struck first early in the second half to pull within 8-5, but three was as close as the Leopards would come. Senior Carli Sukonik took a feed from freshman Kierstyn Voiro and scored at the 21:07 mark, which sparked a 6-0 run. Beausoleil and LaBeau scored twice in that span before a Garden free position goal made it 14-5 with 6:23 remaining. The teams traded goals the rest of the way for the 15-6 final.
Final shots were 22-11 in favor of Lehigh while the Mountain Hawks held an 11-7 edge in groundballs. Lehigh finished with a 13-10 advantage in draw controls. Sophomore Taylor Tvedt made two saves in goal across Lafayette's Anna Raymond who finished with three.
The Mountain Hawks will return home on Saturday when they host Loyola at 4 p.m. Additional changes to the following week's schedule sees Lehigh traveling to Bucknell on Tuesday (Mar. 24) before heading to Mount St. Mary's on Thursday (Mar. 26) with the originally-scheduled game at Bryant back on the schedule for Saturday (Mar. 28).
"We have high expectations," said Redfern. "We just came off a three-game losing streak. We're going to use this as our momentum to become the team that we can be and have our potential materialize.
