CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins Saturday at the USF Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 6-2 victory over Florida A&M, then used a two-out, seventh-inning rally to defeat UMass-Lowell 6-5.

Lehigh finishes its spring break trip with a 4-0 showing at the Michele Smith Tournament. The Mountain Hawks went 10-2 in their 12 spring break games in Florida and stand at 13-3 overall.

In its first game of the day, the Mountain Hawks got a pair of early RBI from junior MacKenzie Velasquez and created some distance with four runs in the top of the seventh.

Senior Emma Capetz led off the top of the third inning with a single. Lehigh loaded the bases with one out and Velasquez grounded out to second base scoring Capetz to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead.

A Denise Anderson sacrifice fly tied the game in the bottom of the third before Velasquez put Lehigh back in front in the fifth, doubling home freshman Nicole Yozzo who recorded a two out bunt single and then stole second and third before scoring on the double.

Lehigh added some cushion with four runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Yozzo and junior Morgan Decker and a bases loaded error that plated two more runs when junior Jessica Calvini reached base.

Florida A&M (4-26) loaded the bases with no outs against freshman Cassie Lajeunesse in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Christine Campbell came on to get out of the jam, allowing just a sacrifice fly to the three batters she faced.

Lajeunesse claimed her first career win, allowing two runs on nine hits in six-plus innings with two walks and a strikeout. Campbell came on to claim her second save of the week.

Both teams recorded nine hits, with Yozzo finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Lehigh's game with UMass-Lowell turned into a back-and-forth affair with the lead changing hands three times. After three scoreless innings, the Mountain Hawks broke through for three runs in the top of the fourth. Lattanzio led off with a single to right and moved to second when senior Emily Bausher walked. A one-out RBI single by Capetz brought home Lattanzio to put Lehigh on the board and freshman Carolyn Wright followed with a two-run single that put the Mountain Hawks in front 3-0.

An RBI single by Ally Greene got UMass-Lowell on the board in the bottom of the fifth and the Riverhawks capitalized on an error and a dropped third strike to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.

Tori Alcorn reached on a dropped third strike, allowing Emilia Davies to score the tying run. Two batters later Brianna Martin's two-run single to right put UMass-Lowell up 5-3.

Riverhawk starter Erica Armenti quickly recorded the first two outs in the seventh, but singled by freshman Katie Schultz and Yozzo plus a walk to pinch hitter Cassie Waggy loaded the bases with two outs. The tying runs scored as Decker reached on an error by shortstop Alisha Welch. Lattanzio then singled to right, scoring freshman Rachel Timberman with the go-ahead run.

Campbell retired the Riverhawks in order in the seventh to complete the Saturday sweep. She allowed five runs (one earned) on seven hits to pick up her sixth victory of the season (6-1). Campbell struck out eight and walked three.

Armenti took the loss for UMass-Lowell (9-10) allowing three earned runs on seven hits.

Both teams finished with seven hits, with Lattanzio and Schultz both posting two in the nightcap.

Lehigh is currently scheduled to open its home slate with five games this week. The schedule currently calls for a doubleheader against Penn on Wednesday before a visit from defending Patriot League champion Boston University in the league-opening series Saturday and Sunday.
