Mountain Hawks head to Penn for Wednesday doubleheader

3/17/2015 1:55:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The Lehigh softball team will look to improve on its strong start to the season on Wednesday as the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania in a doubleheader, with first pitch for game one set for 3 p.m.

Wednesday's doubleheader was originally scheduled for Lehigh but unplayable field conditions in Bethlehem forced the twinbill to move south to Penn Park. The Quakers will serve as the home team on their home field.

The Mountain Hawks have surged out of the gates to begin the season by compiling a 13-3 overall record including victories in their last four games.

Lehigh began the season by winning three of four games at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Florida, against Omaha, Northern Iowa and Saint Francis. Their only defeat in the tournament came at the hands of the Indiana Hoosiers on Feb. 27.

Following the Citrus Classic, Lehigh took five of six games at the Rebel Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida, falling only to Creighton by a score of 4-0.

After Lehigh split the next two games against Georgetown, a 3-1 victory, and USF, a 4-2 loss, the Mountain Hawks swept the USF Spring Break Tournament, defeating Green Bay, Central Michigan, Florida A&M and UMass-Lowell.

Lehigh has been led this year by freshman leadoff hitter Nicole Yozzo who, over the last eight games, has compiled a .444 batting average by hitting safely in seven of those eight games. Yozzo proved critical for the Mountain Hawks in their game against UMass-Lowell when she singled with two outs in the seventh inning and eventually came around to score the game-tying run in a 6-5 Lehigh victory. With her performance last week, Yozzo earned the Patriot League Rookie of the Week award. The honor is Yozzo's second in three weeks.

Sophomore Vicky Lattanzio also came on last week, batting .409 over eight games with two game-winning hits; a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to beat Green Bay and the go-ahead RBI single to beat UMass-Lowell in the spring break finale.

Senior shortstop Emma Capetz led Lehigh with five RBI last week, while junior Morgan Decker continues to lead the team with ten RBI overall.

In the circle, Lehigh was led last week by sophomore Christine Campbell who allowed only two earned runs in her five appearances last week, picking up three wins and two saves. Campbell tied a career high with eight strikeouts in her performance against UMass-Lowell on March 14.

The Mountain Hawks will now turn their attention to the 6-5 Quakers. Penn is led by senior pitcher Alexis Borden who has allowed a mere eight earned runs this season to net her 2.24 ERA, placing her second within the Ivy League. At the plate, sophomore Alexis Sargent has excelled, amassing 12 RBIs on the season, which leads the team.

The only common opponent that both Lehigh and Penn have played this year is Central Michigan, with both teams experiencing their fair share of success. The Quakers have faced Central Michigan three times, emerging victorious in two of the meetings. Lehigh played Central Michigan just once this season on March 13 and defeated the Chippewas 3-2.

Last year's scheduled Lehigh-Penn doubleheader at Penn Park was rained out. The Quakers swept a twinbill from the Mountain Hawks in Philadelphia in 2013.

Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Lehigh is slated to open Patriot League play this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host defending league champion Boston University for three games.
