Lehigh blanks Penn twice to sweep doubleheader in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – Powered by a pair of three-hit shutouts the Lehigh softball team swept a non-league doubleheader from Penn Wednesday at Penn Park. A six-run fifth inning helped back senior Emily Bausher in a 10-0, five-inning triumph in the opener, while sophomore Christine Campbell led Lehigh to a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
The two wins came in Lehigh's first two games outside the state of Florida this season. The sweep extends the Mountain Hawks' winning streak to six straight as Lehigh moves to 15-3 overall. Penn falls to 6-7 with the two losses.
Junior Jessica Calvini led Lehigh offensively with five hits, three runs scored and three RBI in the doubleheader.
Bausher collected her third shutout of the season in the opener, allowing three singles. She struck out six and walked one as she improves to 5-2 on the season. Bausher also helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Calvini led off with a double to right and scored two batters later on a Bausher single up the middle.
The Mountain Hawks added to their lead with three runs in the third. Freshman Nicole Yozzo drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Junior MacKenzie Velasquez singled home Yozzo to put Lehigh up 2-0 and later scored Lehigh's third run on a passed ball. Senior Cassie Waggy capped the frame with a RBI ground out that scored freshman Katie Schultz.
Lehigh put the opener away with a six-run fifth inning. Sophomore Vicky Lattanzio led off with a double to center and Calvini drove in pinch runner Lindsay Phillips with an infield single. An error moved Calvini into scoring position and Bausher drove her in with her second RBI single of the game. A sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Emma Capetz put Lehigh up 7-0, while Bausher came home with the eighth run when Velasquez reached on an error. The inning was capped by RBI singles from junior Morgan Decker and Lattanzio to give the Mountain Hawks a ten run cushion.
The ten runs came on ten hits with Velasquez, Decker, Bausher, Calvini and Lattanzio recording two apiece in the opener.
Alexis Borden started for Penn and allowed six runs in four-plus innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
Campbell posted her second complete game shutout of the season, allowing just three hits while walking three and striking out seven. She improves to 7-1 on the season.
Calvini staked Lehigh to a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run single that played Yozzo and Schultz. In the sixth, Calvini singled with one out and took second on the throw before scoring on a two out double by junior Carissa Zito.
Campbell allowed just one hit through the first six innings but gave up singles to the first two batters in the seventh. The Quakers loaded the bases with one out but Campbell came up with a pop out and a strikeout to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Penn's Mason Spichiger took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits, while walking four and striking out three.
Unplayable field conditions on Lehigh's Goodman Campus have forced several changes regarding Lehigh's Patriot League-opening series against defending champion Boston University. With Lehigh's new softball complex not ready and Kaufman Field not yet playable, the Mountain Hawks and Terriers will play a doubleheader Saturday at Penn Park in Philadelphia with first pitch for game one set for 2 p.m. Sunday's single game has been postponed. No official makeup date has been announced but the final game of the series will likely be played in April when Boston University returns to the Lehigh Valley to face Lafayette.
