Lehigh tops Delaware 5-2 for seventh straight win; nightcap called for darkness

3/25/2015 7:53:00 PM | Softball

NEWARK, Del. – The Lehigh softball team raced to an early 4-0 lead and held off a late Delaware rally to defeat the Blue Hens 5-2 Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader at UD Softball Stadium. Game two was called due to darkness with Lehigh leading 3-1 in the middle of the fourth inning.

The game one win was Lehigh's seventh straight and improved the Mountain Hawks' record to 16-3. Delaware falls to 14-10.

The Mountain Hawks capitalized on five Delaware errors to overcome the Blue Hens' 9-6 advantage in the hit department.

Lehigh loaded the bases with one out in the first after freshman Nicole Yozzo reached on an error, stole second and moved to third on an infield single. A walk to sophomore Vicky Lattanzio loaded the bases before junior Jessica Calvini brought Yozzo home with a ground out to second base.

In the third, the Mountain Hawks added three more runs thanks to two Delaware errors plus a walk and a hit batter. Senior Cassie Waggy's RBI single to right scored Lattanzio from second, while two more runs scored when senior Emily Bausher reached on an error.

The Blue Hens scored their first run on a fielder's choice by Jordan Cargile in the fourth inning as the Mountain Hawks were unable to turn a double play. Jessica Grisler's solo home run off Bausher with two outs in the fifth brought Delaware within 4-2.

Yozzo led off the sixth with a single to third base and two batters later scored a key insurance run on a double to right center by junior Morgan Decker.

Delaware put two runners on in both the sixth and seventh innings but Bausher closed the door without giving up any more runs to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Bausher limited the Blue Hens to just two runs despite allowing at least one base runner in every inning. She allowed nine hits and walked six while striking out two as she improved to 7-2 on the season.

Carolyn Szymanski took the loss for Delaware allowing four runs (one earned) on two hits in three innings. Six different Mountain Hawks recorded their six hits.

In game two, Lehigh led 3-1 behind RBI from Lattanzio, Calvini and junior MacKenzie Velasquez but the game was called due to darkness after the end of the top of the fourth and with the game not yet official, stats from the nightcap will not count.

Lehigh will open up Patriot League play this weekend with three games at rival Lafayette. There has been a slight tweak to the schedule with the Mountain Hawks and Leopards now playing a single game Saturday beginning at 1:30 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Sunday with first pitch for game one set for noon. Video for all three games of the Lafayette series will be available via the Patriot League Network.
