EASTON, Pa. – On a frigid day at Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex, the Lehigh softball team opened Patriot League play with an 11-0, five inning win over rival Lafayette Saturday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks registered ten hits and scored nine runs in their final two at bats to win their eighth consecutive game.
Juniors Alexis Watanabe and MacKenzie Velasquez and sophomore Vicky Lattanzio each drove in two runs to support senior Emily Bausher who struck out seven in a four hit shutout.
Lehigh improves to 17-3 on the season while Lafayette falls to 1-17.
A leadoff double from Lattanzio jump-started the Mountain Hawks in the top of the second inning. After two walks and a strikeout, senior Emma Capetz singled to right field to score Lattanzio with the game's first run. A bases loaded walk to Velasquez gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead.
The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases again in the fourth on two bunt singles and a walk. Watanabe single down the left field line to score Capetz and then Velasquez came home when junior Morgan Decker reached on an error. A RBI ground out by Lattanzio put Lehigh up 5-0 after three and a half innings.
Lehigh created a larger cushion with six runs in the top of the fifth. The Mountain Hawks again loaded the bases with no outs. Velasquez singled to center to score pinch runner Rachel Timberman and after a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a walk Lehigh had an 8-0 advantage. A single to left from Decker, a bases loaded walk to Lattanzio and a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Jessica Calvini gave the Mountain Hawks an 11-0 lead and Bausher retired the Leopards in order in the bottom of the frame to close out the league-opening win.
Lindsey Cherry started for Lafayette allowing five runs on six hits in three-plus innings. Cherry and Kristyn Marinelli combined to issue seven walks, including three with the bases loaded.
Bausher allowed four singles on the way to her fourth shutout of the season. She improved to 8-2 after striking out seven and walking one in her five inning effort. Three of Lafayette's hits came in the fourth inning, but Bausher struck out Alex Jacinto with the bases loaded to keep the Leopards off the board.
Lehigh and Lafayette will wrap-up their Patriot League-opening series with a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for game one is set for noon with video coverage available on the Patriot League Network.
