The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. LafayetteÂ
EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team completed a dominant first weekend of Patriot League play by sweeping a doubleheader from rival Lafayette Sunday at Metzgar Fields. Mountain Hawk pitchers allowed just three hits as Lehigh posted a 2-0 win in the opener and an 8-0, five inning triumph in the nightcap.
Â
Ten different players recorded at least one hit in the doubleheader led by senior Cassie Waggy, juniors Alexis Watanabe and Morgan Decker and freshman Nicole Yozzo who each had three.
Â
Lehigh has now won ten straight games to improve to 19-3 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette is now 1-19 overall and 0-3 in the league. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Leopards 21-0 and allowed just seven hits in the three-game sweep.
Â
Sophomore Christine Campbell fired a two-hit shutout in the opener, her third of the season, to led Lehigh. She struck out four and did not issue a walk as she improves to 8-1 on the season.
Â
Lafayette's Rebecca Dvorak had both hits and was erased on double plays on both occasions.
Â
Â
Stephanie Thomas kept Lehigh in check into the fifth inning when the Mountain Hawks loaded the bases. A throwing error by Dvorak allowed junior Carissa Zito to score from third with Lehigh's second run.
Â
Campbell faced just one batter over the minimum and retired the final eight batters she faced after Dvorak's double in the fifth.
Â
In game two, Lehigh scored twice in the second, five times in the third and once in the fourth to pick up its second run-rule win over its archrival in as many days.
Â
Sophomore Vicky Lattanzio led off the second with a triple to left and then scored on a single by junior Jessica Calvini. Two batters later, Waggy doubled to right center scoring Calvini to give Lehigh a 2-0 edge.
Â
Watanabe was 3-for-3 in the nightcap as her RBI double in the third scored Yozzo to put Lehigh up 3-0. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with one out before senior pitcher Emily Bausher helped her own cause with a three-run double to left center. Waggy was also 3-for-3 in game two and followed with a double of her own, scoring Bausher to put the Mountain Hawks in front by seven.
Â
A RBI single from Decker in the fourth scored Watanabe and capped Lehigh's scoring for the day.
Â
Bausher cruised in the circle, allowing just one baserunner through the first four innings. Samantha Sweigart spoiled Bausher's no-hit bid with a one out single in the fifth but Bausher closed the game out with a fielder's choice and a strikeout. Bausher completed her fifth shutout of the season and her second five-inning shutout in as many days, allowing the one hit while striking out six as she improves to 9-2.
Â
Lehigh hitters finally figured out Thomas in game two, as she gave up five runs on six hits in two plus innings.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule on Wednesday when they welcome defending Patriot League champion Boston University to Kaufman Field for a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m. with audio coverage of both games available at Lehighsports.com.
