Strong starts propel Lehigh to two convincing wins over Boston University

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team rode a pair of fast starts to a doubleheader sweep of defending Patriot League champion Boston University Wednesday at Kaufman Field. A grand slam from junior Jessica Calvini gave Lehigh a 4-0 lead after one inning in the opener, as the Mountain Hawks went on to win 9-1 in six innings. Lehigh then opened game two with an 11 run first-inning outburst in an 11-1 five-inning win.

The doubleheader sweep extends Lehigh's winning streak to 12 straight as the Mountain Hawks improved to 21-3 overall and 5-0 in the Patriot League. Boston University opens its league schedule at 0-2 and falls to 6-18 overall.

"The team did a good job with the scouting report going in, in terms of knowing what good pitches to hit," said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. "I was very pleased that we got off to quick starts in both games. Cal hitting a grand slam in the first inning of the first game obviously helped a lot and really set the tone for the rest of the day."

The Mountain Hawks forced the Terriers to go to their bullpen in the first inning of both contests.

In the opener, junior Alexis Watanabe started things off with a one-out single that hit the second base bag and back-to-back walks to junior Morgan Decker and sophomore Vicky Lattanzio loaded the bases for Calvini, who drilled her second home run of the season to put Lehigh up 4-0.

A single by senior Emily Bausher chased BU starter Lauren Hynes but Makinna Akers came on to induce a ground ball double play to end the inning.

Lehigh added a fifth run in the bottom of the second as freshman Nicole Yozzo reached on an infield single and took second when Jilee Schanda threw to an uncovered first base. Watanabe followed with a double to right center, scoring Yozzo.

Boston University scored its only run of the opener on three consecutive singles in the top of the third, capped by an Emma Wong RBI single.

The Mountain Hawks looked for insurance in the bottom of the sixth and ended up with four runs to close out the game via the eight run rule. Calvini started the rally with a one out single and moved to second on a single by Bausher. An RBI single from senior Cassie Waggy brought Calvini home and when Moriah Connolly missed the cutoff man, the first of four Terrier errors in the inning, runners advanced to second and third.

A sacrifice fly by senior Emma Capetz extended the Lehigh lead to 7-1. Waggy scored when Schanda couldn't come up with a ground ball by junior MacKenzie Velasquez and Velasquez later scored the game-ending run when a Watanabe grounder was mishandled at first base.

Bausher picked up her tenth win of the season allowing a run on six hits in six innings. She walked two and struck out five to improve to 10-2 on the season.

Hynes allowed four runs in 0.1 innings while Akers held the Mountain Hawks at bay until the sixth inning outburst. Boston University stole six bases in the opener but also committed five errors.

Game two saw the Mountain Hawks score all 11 of their runs in a first inning that saw them send 16 batters to the plate. An error, a walk and a fielder's choice put Lehigh in front 1-0 before Lattanzio tripled to right field, scoring two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0.

Two batters later, Capetz singled home Lattanzio. After a single by junior Carissa Zito, Velasquez came up with the bases loaded and singled to center playing two runs before an error by Connolly allowed Zito to come all the way around to put the Mountain Hawks up 7-0 with just one out.

After Yozzo was hit by a pitch, three consecutive RBI singles from Watanabe, Decker and Lattanzio gave Lehigh a ten run inning. Waggy capped the frame with a single to right, scoring Decker.

The 11 runs were plenty for sophomore Christine Campbell, who allowed a run on two hits in five innings of work. Campbell struck out seven and walked three to improve to 9-1 on the season.

"They have both been doing great," Troyan said of his top two pitchers. "Everybody knows how good of a pitcher Emily is and Christine has been doing a great job. She's made some huge strides from last year and her approach has been a lot stronger. Her best days are ahead of her still but she's doing a great job and we're very happy with her progress."

Boston University scored its lone run of the nightcap in the fourth inning as Mandy Fernandez drew a leadoff walk and later scored on an Emily Felbaum double.

Lattanzio led Lehigh in game two with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate.

Melanie Russell started for the Terriers and allowed ten runs (seven earned) on five hits with two walks in 0.1 innings of work, although she re-entered the game in the fourth and threw a scoreless frame. Hynes was charged with one unearned run on five hits in her 2.2 innings.

The Mountain Hawks will continue Patriot League play and their first home stand of the season when they host Bucknell for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch for game one is set for noon from Kaufman Field; while Sunday's single game will also begin at noon. Audio for all three games will be available for free at Lehighsports.com.
