BETHEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will continue their first homestand of the year and Patriot League play when the Mountain Hawks take on Bucknell in a three-game series this weekend. Lehigh is coming off of a doubleheader sweep of Boston University on Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks outscored the Terriers 20-2 in two games to improve to 21-3 overall and 5-0 in Patriot League games. Lehigh has now won 12 straight games.
Â
Lehigh started fast in both games against BU. In game one, the Mountain Hawks built a four run cushion after one inning, thanks to a grand slam by junior Jessica Calvini, her second home run of the season. In the sixth inning, the Mountain Hawks added four more runs with the help of four Terrier errors. Junior MacKenzie Velasquez scored the game-ending run to make it a 9-1 final after six innings.
Â
An 11-run first inning propelled Lehigh to a victory in the second game of the doubleheader. Lehigh sent 16 batters to the plate with sophomore Vicky Lattanzio driving home three runs in the frame and juniors Morgan Decker and Velasquez plating two apiece. The run support was more than enough for sophomore pitcher Christine Campbell, who allowed one run on two hits in five innings.
Â
Campbell and senior Emily Bausher combined to allow just two runs on eight hits with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings of work on Wednesday. Bausher improved to 10-2 on the season, while Campbell moved to 9-1.
Â
Junior Alexis Watanabe continues to lead Lehigh with a .471 batting average, while Calvini's grand slam gave her the team lead with 18 RBI.
Â
Bucknell is currently 19-14 on the season but has lost four straight games, including a doubleheader defeat at Penn State in its last outing. In the Patriot League, the Bison are 1-2 after dropping the final two games of their series with Colgate.
Â
The Bison will rely on Amanda Fazio and Erin Cox for offense. Fazio leads the team in batting average at .392, while Cox leads the Patriot League with six home runs on the season. Kristen Zahn has added five home runs and a team-leading 30 RBI to go along with a .330 average. Fazio has also been Bucknell's top pitcher, going 11-6 with a 3.48 ERA in the circle. Dana Nielsen is Bucknell's No. 2 pitcher, while four other Bison have thrown innings this season.
Â
Last season, Lehigh won two of three games against Bucknell during the regular season, but the Bison ousted the Mountain Hawks from the Patriot League Tournament with a 3-1 win on their way to a runner-up finish.
Â
The three-game series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch for game one set for noon. The series will finish up with a single game at noon on Sunday from Kaufman Field.
