Freshmen lead Mountain Hawks to 4-3 win over Saint Francis (Pa.)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team rebounded from Saturday's loss to Drexel with a 4-3 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks swept all three doubles matches and Lehigh's three freshmen all posted straight set wins in singles for the Mountain Hawks, who even their season record at 2-2.
Lehigh raced to a 1-0 lead by winning all three doubles matches. Sophomore Jamie Campisi teamed with freshman Christina Auyeung for a 6-4 win at the top flight. Freshman Briana Maravich and senior Abby Farrell defeated Dani Gryckiewicz and Alex Sachs at the No. 2 flight. At the third flight, sophomore Cassidy Cruz and freshman Kirstin Godau won 6-2 over Camila Diaz and Brittini Jentz.
In singles action, Lehigh's three freshmen all won in straight sets, while the three upperclassmen all dropped tightly-contested three set matches, including two losses in third set tiebreaks.
Maravich extended Lehigh's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Jentz at No. 4 singles. Auyeung won 6-3, 6-2 over Shivani Patel to put Lehigh up 3-0 but Saint Francis would not go quietly.
At No. 2 singles, Cruz won the first set from Rafa Panizza before the Red Flash junior rallied to win the next three sets 6-4, 6-0. Campisi and Sachs split the first two sets at No. 3 singles, but Sachs won a third set tiebreak 8-6 to win the match and bring Saint Francis within a point at 3-2.
Godau delivered the clinching point for Lehigh with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Diaz at the No. 6 flight. Saint Francis claimed the last match at No. 5 singles as Gryckiewicz won a marathon third set tiebreak 14-12 o defeat Farrell.
Lehigh continues its home stand with two matches next weekend. The Mountain Hawks will host Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday at 10 a.m. before Stony Brook visits Sunday at 10 a.m.
