Lehigh travels to Army Wednesday for important league showdown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh women's basketball team heads to Army Wednesday night for a key Patriot League battle as the two teams tied for second place in the Patriot League square off at 7 p.m. from Christl Arena. The matchup features the two hottest teams in the Patriot League, as Lehigh rides a three-game win streak and Army has been victorious in its last six contests. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 78-71 road victory in their most recent action Saturday at Boston University. The Mountain Hawks used a 33-for-41 (80.5 percent) showing from the free throw line to help down the Terriers as Lehigh picked up its third-straight victory and first-ever win at BU.
 
Sophomore Lexi Martins recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Katie O'Reilly also chipped in 16 points, while classmate Sarah Williams followed with a season-high 12 tallies. Junior Elizabeth Sharlow put together a strong performance as well, registering nine points and seven rebounds.
 
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 37.7 percent (20-for-53) from the field compared to BU's mark of 46 percent (20-for-53). Lehigh went 5-for-15 (33.3 percent) from downtown in addition to its strong showing from the free throw line. Lehigh held a 37-35 rebound edge and forced 12 BU turnovers compared to its own nine.
 
Lehigh enters Wednesday's game with the highest scoring offense in the Patriot League (72.1 ppg), while Army carries the stingiest defense (53.2 ppg allowed). Martins leads Lehigh with 15.6 points and a league-best 11.5 rebounds per game.
 
Red-hot Army enters Wednesday's contest on a six-game win streak. After starting Patriot League play 1-3, with one of those losses coming against Lehigh, the Black Knights have bounced back to a 7-3 league record and 15-5 overall mark. The Mountain Hawks and Army are tied for second place in the league standings and trail first-place American (8-2 PL) by just one game.
 
Army used a 10-2 run with 5:06 remaining in the second half to break a tie and pull away for a 62-53 win over Loyola on Saturday afternoon in the team's most recent action. Army won its sixth game in a row to mark its longest winning streak of the season.
 
The Black Knights received a game-high-tying 20 points from junior Kelsey Minato, while senior Olivia Schretzman added 12 points and nine rebounds. Junior Aimee Oertner posted eight points, seven boards and a career-high-tying six blocks and freshmen Daizjah Morris and Destinee Morris each contributed seven points. Minato earned Patriot League Player of the Week recognition for her efforts.
 
The Black Knights lead the Patriot League in scoring defense (53.2), scoring margin (+10.3), three-point field goal percentage (37.5), rebounding defense (32.2) and turnover margin (+3.10). Minato leads the team, and the Patriot League, with 22.8 points per game.
 
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to complete the season sweep of the Black Knights Wednesday evening. Lehigh will also be looking for its first win against Army in West Point since Feb. 14, 2014 when the Mountain Hawks picked up a 49-39 victory.
 
The Mountain Hawks turned out one of their best defensive efforts of the season and never trailed in a 63-51 victory over Army on Jan. 7 in the season's first meeting inside Stabler Arena. Martins registered her tenth double-double of the season with 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Martins added four assists to go with her fifth-straight double-double. O'Reilly followed with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Williams chipped in 11 points.
 
The Mountain Hawks shot 48.9 percent (22-for-45) from the field and 50 percent (6-for-12) from three-point range. The Mountain Hawk defense held Army to a 35.7 percent (20-for-56) clip from the field and 14.3 percent (2-for-14) showing from downtown. Only five Black Knights were able to find the basket, led by Minato and Olivia Schretzman with 16 points apiece. The Mountain Hawks held a 37-33 rebound advantage.
 
Lehigh returns home Saturday to host Loyola at 2 p.m. inside Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
