BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League Champion Lehigh men's soccer team will travel to CAA Champion Hofstra Thursday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. from Hofstra Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. The winner of Thursday's first round game will advance to the second round Sunday at No. 3 national seed Georgetown.
"We're excited to be in the tournament so we would've been happy to play anybody," said head coach Dean Koski. "It's nice that it's regional and we're familiar with Hofstra. It's a good program and they're having a great year so I think it's going to be a good game."
"We think it's a pretty good draw," said Patriot League Tournament MVP senior Jamie Luchini. "Any team in this tournament is going to be a good team. We think it's a winnable matchup and we're excited to go in there and play our game."
The Mountain Hawks enter the NCAA Tournament with a 13-5-3 overall record and carry a nine-match unbeaten streak into Thursday's matchup. Lehigh will be making its fourth NCAA appearance after the Mountain Hawks earned their second-ever league crown. Lehigh captured a 2-1 win over American Sunday in the Patriot League Championship to earn the title after previously defeating top-seeded Colgate in the semifinals and Bucknell in the quarterfinals.
Hofstra (13-7 overall, 6-2 CAA) claimed its fourth-ever CAA Championship and will be making its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Pride, who hosted their conference championship on their home field, earned a 2-0 win in the CAA Championship game over Delaware Sunday after defeating James Madison 2-0 in the semifinals Friday.
Lehigh and Hofstra have met six times in the past, with the Mountain Hawks holding a slim 3-2-1 advantage in the all-time series. The last meeting took place in 2012 when the Pride earned a 2-0 win at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
The Mountain Hawks are 0-2-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Lehigh moved onto the Round of 16 in the tournament in 2006 when the Mountain Hawks played Rhode Island to a 1-1 draw before advancing on penalty kicks (5-4).
The winner of Thursday's first round game advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 22 at No. 3 Georgetown. The victor of Georgetown/Lehigh-Hofstra advances to the Round of 16.
"We're looking forward to the opportunity to win in the NCAA Tournament," said Koski. "From here on in, we're playing for our season so we have to be prepared."
