BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Freshman Teresa Carotenuto broke out with a career-high four goals as the Lehigh field hockey team defeated Siena 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Carotenuto gave the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead just 8:07 into the game, going on to score two goals in each half, while the Lehigh defense allowed just 10 shots (two shots on goal) for the shutout.
"I thought we played really well as a team," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "We played together and adjusted to some things that we wanted to fix yesterday. We were finishing. It was just a great game all around."
Carotenuto's four goals fell just one goal shy of tying the Patriot League record, owned by Lafayete's Suzi Farrell in 1990. The hat trick was Lehigh's first since 2012. Her four goals were the second-most by any player in the nation this season and eight points were tied for second-most.
"It's really exciting," said Carotenuto. "I really couldn't have done it without the team. Everyone's efforts working really hard together helps everyone create opportunities."
"Teresa is a very talented player, but I think the team created a lot for her, too," said Eversley. "All around, it was a great team effort, but Teresa is definitely a great finisher."
Lehigh came out with a vengeance as Carotenuto fired a shot just 1:30 into the game, but Siena goalkeeper Mary Drabich was there to make the save. Drabich made an even better save one minute later off a Kat Kneizys shot following a penalty corner.
Drabich couldn't stop the Mountain Hawks at the 8:07 mark as sophomore Jackie Renda was stationed outside the circle and fired a hard pass to Carotenuto. The quick shot beat Drabich to make it 1-0.
Less than ten minutes later, Lehigh doubled its lead as senior Lindsey Schott made a pass in front. The ball was deflected, but eventually found Carotenuto's stick. She did the rest to make it 2-0 at 17:43.
The Mountain Hawks added insurance at the 47:21 mark as Schott once again found Carotenuto. The freshman reserved her stick and buried her third goal of the game, and sixth of the season, to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead.
Carotenuto scored her fourth goal of the game at the 54:03 mark off a penalty stroke. From there, the Lehigh defense continued to impress, not allowing a single shot on goal in the second half as junior goalkeeper Julia Ward earned her third-career shutout.
"The defense has been playing great these last few games, so it's nice to see them get the shutout," said Eversley. "They worked hard for it. I'm really proud of the whole team today. It was back to Lehigh field hockey."
Ward finished the afternoon with two saves while Drabich tallied 13 for Siena. The Mountain Hawks finished with a 22-10 edge in shots and 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Lehigh will return home next Friday (Oct. 9) to host #12 Liberty at 6 p.m.
