BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh University Athletics has named Corey Mayer as the new head coach of the Mountain Hawks' field hockey program. The 10th head coach in Lehigh field hockey history, Mayer comes to Lehigh following five seasons as an assistant coach at Villanova University.
Â
"We are thrilled to welcome Corey Mayer to the Lehigh Athletics family as the next leader of our field hockey program," said Murray H. Goodman '48 Dean of Athletics Jeremy Gibson. "Throughout our search process, Corey stood out as a dynamic leader, a strong recruiter, and a coach with a profound understanding of what it takes to be successful at this level. Her alignment with our department's commitment to academic and athletic excellence, combined with her infectious energy, makes her the perfect fit for Lehigh. We are incredibly optimistic about the future of Lehigh field hockey under her leadership and look forward to watching her build a championship-caliber culture, while preserving Lehigh's commitment to the full scholar-athlete experience."
Â
"I am incredibly honored and grateful to be named the next head coach of the Lehigh field hockey program," Mayer said. "I would like to sincerely thank Dean of Athletics Jeremy Gibson and Deputy Director of Athletics Sue Troyan for the opportunity to lead this program. I am also deeply appreciative of Christy Morgan, my former head coach at James Madison, and Joanie Milhous, head coach at Villanova, whose mentorships and guidance have played an invaluable role in my growth and development as a coach."
Â
Mayer was a part of a Villanova program that won 41 games in her five seasons, with a high of 11 in 2022. The Wildcats qualified for the Big East Tournament in 2023 and 2025. At Villanova, Mayer led practice planning both in and out of season. She served as the Wildcats' recruiting coordinator and also coordinated alumni relations efforts and travel.
Â
A 2019 graduate of James Madison University, Mayer spent the spring 2021 season as a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, where she helped lead the Dukes to a CAA regular season championship.
Â
A native of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Mayer was an All-CAA player at JMU as a midfielder/back and was selected for the NFHCA Division I Senior Game in 2018. She played in 73 games for the Dukes, totaling 14 goals and eight assists for 36 points. Mayer's JMU teams won 45 games and posted a .592 winning percentage during her four seasons.
Â
Mayer was selected to the USA Women's National Development Team in January 2020 after previously training at the US Virginia High Performance site and being selected for the Young Women's National Championship each year from 2016-19. In 2020 she played for Holcombe Hockey Club in the English Premier League.
Â
A certified USA Field Hockey Level II coach, Mayer began her coaching career as a student assistant at James Madison in 2019. At the club level, Mayer spent nearly three years as a coach for FSC Field Hockey Club in Hatfield, Pa.
Â
"I am excited to build a passionate team culture by recruiting student-athletes who thrive both on the field and in the classroom," Mayer said. "I look forward to positioning Lehigh field hockey as a top contender within the Patriot League."
