BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh field hockey kicked off the 2026 campaign at home on Friday evening from Ronald J. Ulrich Field against the Long Island University Sharks. Senior Gracen Brant's two goals helped guide the Mountain Hawks to a 2-0 shutout victory and head coach Corey Mayer's first career win.

Lehigh (1-0) and LIU (0-1) played to a 0-0 tie after the first quarter, with senior Ella Stephenson recording the period's only shot on goal. The Mountain Hawks found an opportunity with under seven minutes remaining in the half when Brant and first-year Lauren Koomans found themselves in a two on one with the LIU goalkeeper. Koomans found Brant who put the ball in the back of the cage to give Lehigh a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

The Mountain Hawks and Sharks once again played a scoreless period in the third despite Lehigh registering six shots to LIU's two. Lehigh then put forth a dominant display in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Sharks 5-0 in the frame. Brant scored her second goal of the game unassisted with under nine minutes to play to secure the season-opening victory for Lehigh.

Brant and senior Georgia Reynolds led the way offensively for the Mountain Hawks with four shots apiece. Junior Jordyn Pepper tallied three shots, junior Carly Smith took two, Koomans shot twice while Stephenson, junior Kristina Johnson and sophomore Samantha Hillman each took one shot in Friday's win.

Senior goalkeeper Kate Burgess made three saves in the shutout victory.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday, September 4 at 4 p.m. on the road at the University of Iowa.
