Lehigh tops Holy Cross, 2-1 for second straight Patriot League victory

10/31/2015 2:00:00 PM | Field Hockey

WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman Teresa Carotenuto scored both Lehigh goals while junior goalkeeper Julia Ward made five saves to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 2-1 victory at Holy Cross on Saturday. The win marks Lehigh's second straight in Patriot League play, both on the road. The Mountain Hawks will wrap up their season on Sunday when they travel to Brown to face the Bears.

"I was very impressed that we were able to get two goals in the first half," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "Our play was fantastic all-around. In the second half, the play was a bit chaotic, but the team stuck together to pull out the win. I am so proud of them all."

Ward came up with an early save in the game's eighth minute, but it proved to be one of the only times she was tested in the first half. Freshman Isabel McKeown fired a shot at the 11:32 mark, but Holy Cross' Audra Kinney came up with a defensive save.

The Mountain Hawks ratcheted up the pressure as the first half progressed as junior Marissa Glatt and senior Zoey Pacheco fired shots in a 34-second span beginning in the 20th minute, but Crusaders goalkeeper Megan Inch came up with both saves. However, Inch couldn't stop Carotenuto's shot from the right side of the circle at the 22:07 mark, making it 1-0.

Carotenuto doubled Lehigh's lead just under 10 minutes later, assisted by junior Kassidy Green at 31:20. Ward made a save with just 21 seconds on the first-half clock to help the Mountain Hawks go into halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

Holy Cross cut Lehigh's lead in half just 2:53 into the second half and immediately followed with more pressure, but Ward stood tall. In the 41st minute, the junior goalkeeper came up with two saves in succession to keep the Mountain Hawks in front. Just over five minutes later, Lehigh earned two straight penalty corners, and shots on goal, but couldn't extend its lead.

The teams traded opportunities the rest of the half, but the score remained 2-1. Holy Cross finished the second with a 7-4 edge in shots, but each goalkeeper made three saves as the game ended with Lehigh in front.

Final shots were 13-12 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Lehigh held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Ward's five saves came across Inch, who made seven for Holy Cross.

Lehigh will close its season on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Brown to face the Bears at 12 p.m.
