Lehigh drops season finale at Brown, 3-0

11/1/2015 2:44:00 PM | Field Hockey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Lehigh field hockey team wrapped up the 2015 season on Sunday afternoon at Brown with a 3-0 defeat. In the second half, the Mountain Hawks outshot the Bears 9-7 and held a 6-5 edge in penalty corners, but it wasn't enough. Despite the loss, Lehigh wrapped up its season on a high note, winning its final two Patriot League games, both on the road.

"Brown took advantage of its corner opportunities and although we had a good team effort, we fell short," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley.

Brown controlled play in the early going, taking a 1-0 lead at the 10:02 mark by turning its third penalty corner into the game's first goal. The Bears continued to impress in the first half, allowing just one Lehigh shot, from junior Marissa Glatt in the 25th minute. Junior Julia Ward stood tall in goal, making five first-half saves to keep Lehigh's deficit at just one following 35 minutes of play.

The Mountain Hawks' offense came alive in the second half, quickly creating two penalty corners before the half was two minutes old. However, it was Brown who turned its first second-half penalty corner into a 2-0 lead at the 43:58 mark.

The teams went back and forth over the ensuing minutes. Senior Erin Ricker tested Brown goalkeeper Katie Hammaker twice in less than six minutes, but Hammaker came up with both saves. She also stopped Mygatt in the 61st minute to keep Lehigh off the scoreboard.

The Bears added an insurance tally at 63:33 then held off two more shots by the Mountain Hawks, including another shot on goal from Ricker, to wrap up the 3-0 victory.

Final shots were 17-10 in favor of Brown while the Bears held an 11-6 edge in penalty corners. Ward made six saves across Hammaker, who stopped five.

The Mountain Hawks wrapped up their season 5-13 and 2-4 in league play, which included strong efforts against top teams. Lehigh closed out the year with road wins at Colgate and Holy Cross, while its four league losses came by a total of seven goals. The Mountain Hawks took American to overtime while holding current No. 15 nationally-ranked Boston University to three goals, tying for the Terriers' lowest offensive output in a Patriot League game this season.

"I am proud of the team because they made many strides that often go unnoticed," said Eversley. "We were competitive in every Patriot League game and the fact that we ended with two road wins in the league was tremendous."
