BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team kicks off its fall schedule on Sunday when the Mountain Hawks compete in the Bucknell Invitational. Racing begins at 11 a.m. The regatta marks the first of three events scheduled for this fall.
Sunday's event is being held at Shamokin Dam. Because of the changes in the flow of the river, the race may be slightly adjusted. The Bucknell Invitational features a four-mile race, longer than most head races in the fall.
"We have a very young group this year, which is allowing us to really focus on the small things and build a team culture that will be able to develop into a winning culture, both on and off the water," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Our leaders have done a great job of stepping up, trying to create a positive atmosphere where the team comes first in all aspects."
One of the biggest goals for the fall is acclimating a new freshmen class. So far, the newcomers have prepared well for their first college race.
"The freshmen have learned a lot in a very short period of time to be ready to race this weekend," said Conley. "I am excited to see the initial race unfold for them and what they can handle. They are a strong group, so a lot will be expected of them over the next four years."
Another focus in the fall is setting the culture and creating a foundation for the year ahead.
"One of our goals was to create and foster a culture that breeds commitment and winning," said Conley. "In order to do that, we have smaller goals that are focused on the little things and daily improvement."
The Mountain Hawks are set to begin the fall by facing some quality competition in Sunday's Bucknell Invitational.
"We will be racing two of the historically top teams we will see in the spring," said Conley. "Seeing them this early gives us an understanding of where we are. If we are ahead or behind, we know working from that point forward will be incredibly important to our success in the spring."
After this weekend, the Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday at Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
