Mountain Hawks wrap up successful fall opener at Bucknell Invitational

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team wrapped up its fall opener at Bucknell Invitational Sunday as the Mountain Hawks enjoyed a strong first race of 2015-16. The regatta featured a four-mile race against quality regional competition Drexel and host Bucknell.

"We choose this race for multiple reasons," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We know the competition is going to be very good and we're going to see them later in the season. The distance is challenging and allows our coaching staff to see how we shape up in any type of race. It allows us to see our strengths and weaknesses because of the distance."

The invitational featured a staggered start according to boat classification. The Mountain Hawks' Women's Varsity Eight was stopped for approximately 60 seconds due to Drexel's steering cable breaking, which created a collision. Lehigh's crew rebounded well and finished in 21:47. The Second Varsity Eight was Lehigh's first women's crew to finish, coming in 20:52. Lehigh's Third Varsity Eight finished in 22:01.

"I think the Women's 2V, which was actually our Freshmen Eight, really stepped up today," said Conley. "They were racing against athletes who have been rowing for as many as eight years. Many of our crew are walk-ons who just started rowing, but they held our own which was great to see."

On the men's side, Lehigh's Men's Varsity Eight finished in 19:55.8 while the Novice crew wasn't far behind, tallying a time of 20:10.0.

Drexel's Third Varsity crew won the women's race (20:10) while its First Varsity won the men's race (17:41.9).

"I think we have a really mentally-tough group who won't give up, but we need to work on our overall fitness and getting physically stronger," said Conley. "It was clear that we were outclassed in those two areas today, but we have the time over the course of the year to figure that out."

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday at Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

"I think the team identified for themselves what they need to work on, which is great to see because they're taking ownership," said Conley. "What I hope to see from them this week is execution of the things they've identified."
