BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After the fall opener at the Bucknell Invitational last week, the Mountain Hawks return to the water on Saturday when they compete in Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Racing begins at 10 a.m. The day features a much different setup than the Bucknell Invitational, which featured only two other teams in a staggered start according to boat classification.
Â
"This week has been a little condensed as the team came off exams and we wanted to take an extra day to evaluate our weekend results and see how we can improve by utilizing some other resources across campus and in the athletic department," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It's been a condensed, but still productive, week."
Â
The Mountain Hawks feature a much different challenge heading into Navy Day Saturday.
"Navy Day is a much larger regatta where the team will face off against a number of other competitors and in a variety of events," said Conley. "Navy Day, depending on the event could have as many as 20 competitors or more. We need to have this experience so when we race at a large regatta in the spring, we are comfortable."
Â
One of the takeaways from the Bucknell Invitational is that it's a mentally tough-group. Lehigh is looking to build upon its foundation and continually improve this fall and into the spring season. Â
"The goal for this race is to see what boats can make it into the top 50 percent of the event they're entered," said Conley. "The competition is really fast at this regatta and I'm looking forward to us stepping up."
Â
Lehigh competed in Navy Day last year, highlighted by a fourth-place finish by the Women's Freshmen Four while placing 10th in two other races.
