BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Early in the second half, the Lehigh field hockey team pulled within 2-1 behind a goal from senior Erin Ricker, but Lock Haven responded with the game's final two goals to defeat the Mountain Hawks 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Sunday also marked Senior Day as Lehigh's seven seniors were recognized prior to their final home games in the Brown and White. Lehigh finished the game with a 15-14 edge in shots while junior goalkeeper Julia Ward tallied eight saves.
"I think we had some great passing partners," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "There were certain things that we've been working on that I saw the girls execute, which is great. We just came up short in the end. At halftime, we talked about how we needed to get on the board and our sense of urgency needed to be up. We focused on trying to get a goal in the first five minutes, which happened."
Â
Sunday marked the final home games for seniors Alex Beatson, Caitlin Bryan, Kat Kneizys, Taylor Mygatt, Zoey Pacheco, Erin Ricker and Lindsey Schott.
Â
"They're like my babies because they were my first recruiting class," said Eversley. "It's sad and I'm happy for them, but at the same time, they've grown a lot and really helped impact the program. I thank them and I thought they all played with great effort today."
Â
The Mountain Hawks earned the game's first penalty corner at the nine-minute mark and followed with a Ricker shot which was stopped by Lock Haven goalkeeper Maddie Wagenfeld. The Bald Eagles answered just over one minute later, scoring off their first corner as a direct shot found its way past Ward to make it 1-0 at 10:23.
Â
The Bald Eagles made it 2-0 just under 15 minutes later as Ward made a save of a Rachel Valentine shot, but Lydia George fired the rebound towards goal and Kiersten Cepeda made the deflection past Ward at the 25:13 mark.
Â
Just seconds after the second goal, Mygatt had a glittering opportunity point blank in front of the cage, but Wagenfeld made an aggressive save to keep her squad ahead by two.
Â
The Mountain Hawks controlled play early in the second half, and it led to a quick goal. Off a penalty corner, Kneizys fired the initial shot, which was saved. Junior Marissa Glatt and freshman Teresa Carotenuto followed with shots on goal, but Wagenfeld those stops as well. A relentless Lehigh attack continued to fire shots and was able to beat the Lock Haven keeper at the 36:56 mark as Ricker scored her first goal of the season to make it 2-1.
Â
Lock Haven responded just over two minutes later off a rebound of its own. The Mountain Hawks continued to attack, tallying the game's next five penalty corners and five of the next six shots, but couldn't pull closer. The Bald Eagles added a late goal off a succession of Ward saves to account for the 3-1 final.
Â
Along with the 15-14 edge in shots, the Mountain Hawks held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Ward finished with eight saves while junior Janelle High made a defensive stop. Wagenfeld finished with nine saves for Lock Haven.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Colgate in the first of a four-game road trip to close out the 2015 regular season. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. from Tyler's Field.
