Green overtime goal gives Lehigh 2-1 win at Colgate

10/24/2015 4:11:00 PM | Field Hockey

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Lehigh field hockey team outshot Colgate 19-10 and it was the 19th shot which was the difference as junior Kassidy Green scored 3:06 into the extra session to give the Mountain Hawks a dramatic 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon. After more than 60 minutes with no score by either side, each team scored in the final nine minutes to send the game to overtime.

"As a team, we played tremendously," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "Julia (Ward) saved a penalty stroke, the defense and midfielders continued to step up and we finished. It was a great, hard win for us and I'm proud of this team. Kassidy, Julia, Marissa (Glatt), Zoey (Pacheco) and Erin (Ricker) all had especially strong games."

The first half saw just seven combined shots, four from Colgate and three from Lehigh. Ward was strong, making three first-half stops

The Mountain Hawks held a 13-6 second-half edge in shots, but Colgate had the early momentum. Just under three minutes in, Ward stopped a shot from Whitney Jones, but less than one minute later, the Raiders were awarded a penalty stroke. Ward quickly gave momentum back to Lehigh by stopping Molly Klare's attempt.

From there, the Raiders had just four shots the rest of the half while Lehigh's offense got going. In the 48th minute, the Mountain Hawks fired four shots in succession. Three were saved while one hit the post, to keep the game scoreless.

Junior Marissa Glatt single-handedly gave the Mountain Hawks a lead at the 61:35 mark as she took the ball all the way from midfield to the goal and made a touch past Colgate goalkeeper Maria Krull to make it 1-0.

Colgate answered just under six minutes later off a penalty corner. The Mountain Hawks ended regulation with pressure, but could only get one shot off, which was stopped, as the game went to overtime tied at one.

Lehigh tallied all three shots in overtime, converting the game-winning just over three minutes in. Krull stopped Glatt's initial shot off a penalty corner, but Green buried the rebound to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 victory, their first win at Colgate since 1996. Lehigh won that game 1-0, also in overtime.

Final shots were 19-10 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while penalty corners were tied at five. Ward finished with five saves while Krull made 11.

Lehigh returns to action in less than 24 hours when the Mountain Hawks head to Cornell to face the Big Red. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
