ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell used a first-half surge to take a commanding halftime lead and wouldn't look back as the Big Red downed the Lehigh field hockey team 7-0 on Sunday afternoon. After 10 minutes without a score, Cornell took a 1-0 lead at the 10:32 mark then added three more goals in the span of 8:57 before reaching halftime. Junior goalkeeper Julia Ward finished with 11 saves for the Mountain Hawks.

"We had a very good shoting from the midfield today," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "Cornell is a strong team who has very good execution on corners. We gave them too many chances, and we were unable to capitalize on our own opportunities."

Ward thwarted off an early Cornell charge, making two saves in the first three minutes. Senior defender Kat Kneizys followed with a defensive save at the 4:52 mark to help keep the game scoreless. Ward added two more saves before the game was 10 minutes old, but she couldn't stop a Big Red penalty corner in the 11th minute as Katy Weeks made it 1-0.

Senior Zoey Pacheco immediately answered with Lehigh's first shot on goal, but Cornell keeper Elizabeth Schaeffler made the stop. After 14 minutes scoreless minutes, the Big Red scored three quick goals, beginning at the 24:38 mark, to take a 4-0 lead at the half.

Cornell extended it lead in the second half, scoring at 41:01, 57:42 and 67:42 for the 7-0 final. The Mountain Hawks fired three second-half shots on goal, by Pacheco and juniors Gabby Tofig and Amanda Granger, but new Big Red goalie Mackenzie Gagliardi made the saves.

Final shots were 29-5 in favor of Cornell while the Big Red held a 9-1 edge in penalty corners. After Ward made 11 saves in 57:52, she was replaced by sophomore Katie Morris, who stopped one-of-two shots sent her way.

The Mountain Hawks will close out their season when they travel to Holy Cross on Saturday and Brown on Sunday. Gametime at Holy Cross is set for 11 a.m.
