BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Looking to get back on track, the Lehigh field hockey team hits the road this weekend for games at Colgate Saturday and Cornell Sunday. Both contests are set to begin at 1 p.m. After two wins in the span of 10 days, the Mountain Hawks dropped a pair of games last weekend against quality opponents, falling to No. 17 Boston University and Lock Haven in a pair of competitive contests.
Both of this weekend's games can be viewed online as Saturday's game can be seen for free through the Patriot League Network while Sunday's contest can be viewed through the Ivy League Network. A one-day Ivy League Network pass can be purchased for $9.95.
Last weekend, Lehigh fell behind 2-0, but bounced back with a strong second half, standing within two goals deep into the game. The Mountain Hawks fired six shots, three on goal, over the final 35 minutes, but couldn't put one past Boston University goalkeeper Cammy Jensen. Saturday marked the fourth straight highly-competitive Patriot League game. Lehigh also took American to overtime, held a lead at Bucknell until midway through the second half and stood tied with Lafayette deep into the second half. The Mountain Hawks still have two Patriot League games remaining, beginning with Colgate on Saturday.
Senior Erin Ricker scored Lehigh's goal vs. a strong 13-3 Lock Haven opponent on Senior Day Sunday. Similar to Saturday, the Bald Eagles took an early lead, but Ricker's goal less than two minutes into the second half pulled Lehigh within one at 2-1. However, Lock Haven scored the game's final two goals. The second half saw the Mountain Hawks outshoot the Bald Eagles, 9-7, and out-corner them 6-1.
One year after making the Patriot League Tournament, Colgate enters the weekend 0-13 and 0-4 in Patriot League play. Molly Klare leads the offense with seven points behind three goals and one assist. Jessica Gardiner has five points (one goal, team-leading three assists) while two others own four points. Katie Connors has tallied a team-leading three defensive saves while Maria Krull has seen the majority of time in goal, posting a 4.58 goals against average and .734 save percentage.
Colgate leads the all-time series, 19-13-1 which includes three straight wins. Last season, Kassidy Green scored her first-career goal and the Mountain Hawks outshot the Raiders 19-5 in the second half, but it wasn't enough. Lehigh's last win over Colgate came at home in 2011 by a 2-1 final. The teams alternated wins from 2004-12 in a highly-competitive series.
Lehigh will head to Cornell Sunday, who enters the weekend 8-5 overall and hosts Ivy League opponent Brown on Saturday. The Big Red have won three of their last four games, beating, Yale, Holy Cross and Harvard while falling at Albany last time out. Krysten Mayers by far and away leads the team in goals (12) and points (27). Marisa Siergiej has tallied six goals and two assists for 14 points, while Katy Weeks has exceeded double-figure points with 12 via four goals and four assists. Luisa Schulte-Bockum has posted eight defensive saves and goalkeeper Kelly Johnson has tallied a 1.79 GAA and .667 save percentage.
The Big Red lead the all-time series, 21-1-1 with Lehigh's victory coming in 1993 by a 2-1 final.
After this weekend, the Mountain Hawks will close out their season when they travel to Holy Cross (Oct. 31) and Brown (Nov. 1) next weekend.
