Mountain Hawks post 6-1 win over Niagara for first victory of 2015

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team posted its first win of the 2015 Saturday as the Mountain Hawks downed Niagara 6-1 inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks bounced back from a one-point loss to Delaware on Wednesday by winning two doubles matches and five singles matches against the Purple Eagles to even their season record at 1-1.
In doubles action, Lehigh claimed the first point of the match behind quick wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Sophomores Jamie Campisi and Cassidy Cruz downed Paulina Velasquez and Brooke Briseno 6-2 at the top flight, while freshmen Kirstin Godau and Abby Duddy clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Iva Celan and Stella Peisakhaova. Niagara prevented a Lehigh sleep with a win in a tiebreak at the No. 2 flight.
Campisi started off singles play with her second win in as many matches, downing Ashley Ta 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 flight.
Niagara claimed its only point at No. 3 singles as Velasquez won over senior captain Abby Farrell in straight sets but Lehigh won the final four matches to pick up the victory.
At the top flight, Cruz dropped the first set 4-6 to Celan, but rebounded to take the next two, dropping just one game in the process. Freshman Briana Maravich then delivered the clinching point, winning a second set tiebreak 7-5 to defeat Maria Ortiz 6-2, 7-6. Lehigh claimed the final two matches, with freshmen Godau and Duddy both prevailing in straight sets.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their homestand next weekend with two matches inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh will host Drexel Saturday at 11 a.m. and Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday at 2 p.m.
