BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a quarterfinal exit in last season's Patriot League tournament, the Lehigh women's tennis team will aim to improve on last year's 7-10 record as the Mountain Hawks prepare to open the 2015 season on Wednesday. This season, the Mountain Hawks will be led by head coach Wouter Hendrix, who takes over the women from legendary coach Dave Shook, who retired in December after 27 years with the Lehigh tennis programs. Hendrix coached Lehigh's men exclusively in the last two seasons but prior to that served as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs.
Â
This year's Mountain Hawks squad features just one senior, Wilsonville, Oregon product Abby Farrell, who will provide the young Mountain Hawks with veteran leadership both on and off the court. Farrell is an IDEAS major who has worked tirelessly throughout her time at Lehigh.
Â
"Abby is proven to be a terrific leader," Hendrix said. "I know she is going to lead the squad in all aspects of the student-athlete experience. Abby sets the tone in the classroom and does all the right things. She is also involved in service around campus so she sets the bar high for the team off the court."
Â
Farrell, who was chosen as a captain alongside junior Ali Kaminetsky, has been a solid contributor since her freshman year. Last season, she posted a 9-6 singles record, while playing primarily at the No. 2 flight.
Â
"Abby is really going to be a vocal leader for us on the court," Hendrix said. "She's one of the hardest working athletes we have."
Â
Hendrix has also praised some freshman for their performances during the fall season, including Christina Auyeung, who according to Hendrix, is already one of the most talented players that the Mountain Hawks will boast this season.
Â
"Christina will most likely play in the No. 1 position for us this spring," Hendrix said. "I've been very impressed by her thus far and I hope that she can get wins for us at the No. 1 position."
Â
In doubles play, Auyeung will pair up with Jamie Campisi, a sophomore. Hendrix highlighted their aggressive style together during doubles play.
Â
Hendrix described this year's women's tennis team as young squad with a lot of depth and talent. Campisi and fellow sophomore Cassidy Cruz are also young players that will find themselves towards the top of the lineup. As a freshman, Campisi was impressive as she fought through injuries to finish 7-3 in singles matches a season ago, and she went 4-0 during the regular season in the Patriot League.
Â
"The top priority with Jamie is to keep her healthy," Hendrix said. "If she can stay healthy, she's bound to do great things."
Â
Cruz led Lehigh with 11 singles victories in 2014 and is expected to figure in near the top of Lehigh's lineup. Other returnees from last season include junior Marian Prim and sophomores Jessica Graham and Nina Larraza.
Â
Freshmen Briana Maravich, Kirstin Godau and Abby Duddy will provide depth towards the back of the Mountain Hawk rotation. Hendrix said that they are strong, blue-collar type of players that show flashes of great talent but are hard-working and committed as well.
Â
For Hendrix, coaching the women's team will be a new experience. While he has seen great success with the men in the past, coaching the women will present a new challenge. Hendrix said that he is excited about this group and that his coaching philosophy will be unchanged.
Â
"I look forward to bringing my coaching style to the women and watching them grow and succeed," Hendrix said. "It's all about being committed and complete both on and off the court. The team policy is the same.
Â
"Taking over the women's team from Shook is an honor, Hendrix continued. "He did a great job with them in the fall and I just need to continue the path that he has laid out for me.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will open their 20-match spring season on Wednesday against Delaware at the Lewis Tennis Center. Action is set to begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday's match is the first of eight straight at home for the Mountain Hawks, who will also entertain Niagara on Saturday.
Â
Following the eight match home stand, Lehigh will play three matches in Florida over spring break before returning home. Patriot League play begins March 29 when Lehigh hosts Navy and the regular season concludes April 20 with the annual rivalry match at Lafayette. Colgate will host the Patriot League Tournament April 23-26 in Hamilton, N.Y.
Â
Wednesday's opponent, Delaware, opened its season with a 5-2 win over Howard on January 17. The Blue Hens were 8-8 last year, which included a 4-3 win at Lehigh in late March.
