CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Four members of the Lehigh wrestling team posted top eight finishes as the Mountain Hawks wrapped-up competition at the Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling Southern Scuffle Friday at McKenzie Arena. All three of Lehigh's quarterfinalists advanced to the semifinals while senior Marshall Peppelman worked his way through the wrestlebacks to finish sixth at 165.
Â
Juniors Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown and sophomore Elliot Riddick all came up short in semifinal matches but came back to wrestle for third place against opponents from Penn State. Beckman and Brown were successful in their matches and finished third at 133 and 184 respectively, while Riddick dropped a one-point decision and settled for fourth at 197.
Â
Lehigh finished seventh in the team race with 79 points. Penn State won its fifth straight team title with 165 points. Missouri finished second with 150, followed by Oklahoma State with 135.5 and Nebraska with 116. Michigan finished fifth with 88.5 points while a fall by Cornell's Gabe Dean in the finals at 184 lifted the Big Red by the Mountain Hawks into sixth place by half a point. Dean was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.
Â
Beckman's day featured three wins over familiar foes but an upset 7-5, tiebreaker loss to Rossi Bruno of Michigan in the semifinals. He opened the day with a 3-2, tiebreaker win over Mark Grey of Cornell. In a rematch of last year's EIWA finals, Beckman defeated Drexel's Kevin Devoy 11-5 in the consolation finals. That win earned him a rematch with Penn State's Jimmy Gulibon, the top seed, who knocked off Beckman 8-3 in Rec Hall on November 9. This rematch was 1-1 through regulation before Beckman converted a single leg shot into a takedown late in the sudden victory period to win 3-1.
Â
Brown's third-place effort was highlighted by a pair of wins over Penn State's Matt McCutcheon. His day began with a 4-2 win in the quarterfinals and ended with a 4-0 win over the Nittany Lion in the third place match. In both matches Brown had the only takedown plus an escape and riding time advantage. The only scoring for McCutcheon was a late reversal in Friday morning's quarterfinal. In the semifinals, Brown met Pittsburgh's Max Thomusseit for the second time this season. Thomusseit converted a low double-leg takedown in the second period, which was the difference in a 3-1 victory.
Â
Riddick placed fourth at 197 despite wrestling just two bouts on the day and losing both. He won by medical forfeit in the quarterfinals before coming up on the short end of a 4-2 score against Duke's Conner Hartmann in the semifinals. Following another medical forfeit in the consolation semifinals, Riddick earned a rematch with Penn State's Morgan McIntosh for third place. McIntosh scored the first takedown, with Riddick answering in the second period to tie the match at 3-3. McIntosh rode out the final period and the riding time advantage was enough for a 4-3 victory.
Â
Peppelman went 4-2 on Friday to place in his first action down at 165 this season. In the fourth round of consolations, Peppelman eliminated senior teammate Santiago Martinez with a 2-1 win in the tiebreakers and then beat Missouri's Mikey England 10-3 before winning by medical forfeit in the sixth round consolations.
Â
In the consolation quarterfinals, Peppelman etched his name into Lehigh's record book taking Wyoming's Dakota Friesth down to his back and securing the fall in just 13 seconds, the third-fastest fall in school history.
Â
Peppelman dropped his consolation semifinal to Oklahoma State's Chance Marstellar 6-3 and had to settle for sixth place following a 4-0 loss to Army's Coleman Gracey, where the Black Knight thwarted multiple second period reversal attempts and added a third period takedown.
Â
Of the 11 Mountain Hawks who advanced to Friday, two finished just one win short of a spot on the podium. Sophomore Mitch Minotti won his first two bouts of the day at 157 but could not overcome a first period 4-0 deficit against North Carolina State's Tommy Gantt in the sixth round of consolations. Gantt held on for a 6-5 win to eliminate Minotti. At 197, junior John Bolich won his first two bouts, including a 2-1 win over nationally-ranked Nick Bonaccorsi of Pittsburgh. In the sixth round of consolations, Bolich dropped a 12-2 major decision to Michigan's Max Huntley and had to settle for top 12 at the Scuffle.
Â
Freshmen Scott Parker (125) and Drew Longo (149) won one bout on Friday and were eliminated in the fifth round of consolations. Parker held on for a 6-5 win over Cortez Starkes of Gardner-Webb but was eliminated by Dominic Parisi of Appalachian State by a 4-1 score. Longo opened his day with a 5-3 decision over North Carolina State's Sam Melikian but was eliminated by the No. 9 seed, Justin Arthur of Nebraska.
Â
Sophomores Darian Cruz and Doug Vollaro were eliminated in their opening bout of the day. Cruz, competing unattached at 125, fell 8-4 to Parisi, while Vollaro was ousted 8-4 after the second round of tiebreakers against Stanford heavyweight Nathan Butler.
