BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 11 Lehigh heads to Maryland for its first duals of 2015. The Mountain Hawks will meet longtime EIWA rival Navy on Saturday for the 95th time before heading to College Park to face Maryland Sunday as Pat Santoro returns to the school he coached in between stints at Lehigh.
Â
Last time out, Lehigh finished seventh out of 31 teams at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. Juniors Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown finished third at 133 and 184 respectively, while sophomore Elliot Riddick took fourth at 197. Senior Marshall Peppelman moved back down to 165 and placed sixth, despite entering the tournament unseeded. Twelve of Lehigh's Scuffle entrants won at least won bout and as a team the Mountain Hawks finished with five falls.
Â
Peppelman pinned Wyoming's Dakota Friesth in just 13 seconds in the consolation quarterfinals of the Southern Scuffle. The 13-second pin was the third fastest in school history. Bob Sloand owns the fastest fall in school history, pinning Shuttleworth of Oregon State in just 11 seconds in a 1974 dual. Rudy Ashman owns the second fastest fall, pinning an opponent from Columbia in 12 seconds in the 1935 EIWA Tournament.
Â
The results of the recent Midlands Championships and Southern Scuffle caused widespread changes to many of the national rankings. Juniors Mason Beckman, Nathaniel Brown and sophomore Elliot Riddick remain ranked across the board by The Open Mat, InterMat, WIN Magazine and Flowrestling, with Brown owning the highest Lehigh ranking in all polls. Sophomore Mitch Minotti is ranked by InterMat and Flowrestling, while sophomore Randy Cruz in only ranked by The Open Mat.
Â
Navy has spent much of its season thus far on the tournament circuit. The Midshipmen are just 1-1 in duals, with a 23-9 win at George Mason in early November and a 24-16 loss at Drexel on December 13. On the tournament side, the Mids finished eighth of 13 teams at their Navy Classic, finished 26th at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, and most recently finished 24th at the Southern Scuffle. Navy's top wrestler is Peyton Walsh, who is ranked 13th at 165 by InterMat and is coming off a third place finish at the Southern Scuffle. He also finished fifth in Las Vegas. Joel Sharratt is in his first season as Navy's head coach.
Â
Maryland enters a busy weekend of action with a 4-7 dual record in its first year as a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Terrapins will host Harvard Friday before Navy and Lehigh visit on Sunday. Four Terps reached the podium as Maryland finished eighth at the Midlands Championships December 29-30. Josh Snook led the way with a fourth place finish at 174, followed by Dawson Peck, who finished fifth at 285. Also placing for the Terps were Lou Mascola (sixth at 157) and Shyheim Brown (eighth at 141). Maryland has two wrestlers ranked by InterMat: Geoffrey Alexander (No. 18 at 133) and Spencer Myers (No. 11 at 285). Myers has not yet competed for Maryland this season as he spent the fall as a defensive lineman on the Terrapins' football team. Former Lehigh assistant coach Kerry McCoy is in his seventh season as the head coach at Maryland.
Â
This weekend's duals feature three of the five coaches who served under Greg Strobel and went on to get head coaching jobs. Pat Santoro coached alongside Navy's Joel Sharratt in Strobel's early years at Lehigh and coached with Maryland's Kerry McCoy at Lehigh from 2000-03.
Â
Navy is Lehigh's second-most wrestled opponent behind Penn State. These teams will meet for the 95th time with the series even at 47-47. Lehigh has won the last three duals. Maryland has won two of the last three duals against Lehigh, with the Mountain Hawks' most recent win coming in Pat Santoro's debut in the 2008-09 season opener.
Â
Saturday's Lehigh-Navy dual begins at 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. Live video for that dual will be available on the Patriot League Network. Sunday's Lehigh-Maryland match is set for 5 p.m. from XFINITY Pavilion in College Park. There will be no video coverage for that dual but audio will be available on WLVR-FM (91.3) as well as wlvr.org.
Â
Lehigh will be off from competition next weekend and the Mountain Hawks will return to action with a pair of home duals January 24-25 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks will host Franklin and Marshall January 24 at 2 p.m. before welcoming longtime EIWA rival Cornell on January 25 for a 3 p.m. match.
