No. 11 Lehigh rolls to 30-6 win at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the first time in the 105 year history of the Lehigh-Navy wrestling rivalry, Lehigh has gained the upper hand. The 11th-ranked Mountain Hawks won eight of ten bouts and picked up three bonus wins to take a 48-47 lead in the all-time series with a 30-6 win over the Midshipmen Saturday night at Alumni Hall.

With Lehigh lead 15-6 after six bouts, senior Santiago Martinez posted a first period pin in his first match at 174 to pace the Mountain Hawks, who improve to 8-3 in duals and 5-0 against EIWA opponents. Navy falls to 1-2 in dual action.

The Mountain Hawks won the first three bouts to build an early 11-0 lead. Freshman Scott Parker sparked Lehigh off the bat with a 20-4 technical fall over Brant Leadbetter at 125. Parker scored a takedown just 16 seconds into the bout and added a three point near fall to lead 5-0 after one. Parker scored two takedowns in the second period, and three more in the third to end the match at the 6:08 mark.

Junior Mason Beckman and sophomore Randy Cruz then followed with shutout victories at 133 and 141, respectively. Beckman scored an early takedown against Zach Davis and overcame being ridden out in the second period to score a third period reversal in a 4-0 victory. Cruz scored takedowns in the second and third periods and added an escape and riding time advantage to beat Patrick Prada 6-0.

Navy picked up its first win at 149 as Corey Wilding conceded the first takedown to freshman Drew Longo, but rallied with two second period takedowns to win 6-4.

Sophomore Mitch Minotti posted Lehigh's second bonus win of the night with a 9-1 major decision over Jonathan Clemente at 157. Minotti led 4-0 after one period behind a takedown and two point near fall and later added a second period takedown plus a third period reversal and riding time.

The Mids' second and final win came at 165 as 13th-ranked Peyton Walsh won a 2-0 decision over senior Marshall Peppelman; with Walsh riding out the second period and scoring a third period escape plus riding time advantage.

Lehigh responded to Walsh's win by capturing the final four bouts of the dual. Martinez competed at 174 for the first time this season. He hit an arm spin into a headlock to put Jadaen Bernstein on his back for a fall in just 1:44.

At 184, junior Nathaniel Brown won an 8-2 decision over Michael Woulfe. Sophomore Elliot Riddick scored three takedowns and showed strength from the top position in building up 2:44 of riding time advantage in a 9-5 win over Paul Rands at 197.

In the final bout of the dual, sophomore Doug Vollaro broke a 1-1 tie with late third period takedown to defeat Colynn Cook 3-1 at heavyweight.
