BETHLEMHEM Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team gained its 10th straight win over Lafayette Saturday morning. Lehigh finished the morning with 18 total points securing its win over Lafayette who finished with 45 points. Junior Elizabeth Weiler captured her second collegiate cross country individual title running the 6K at a time of 21:34.
"It's great to come out with a 'W' in the win column and to extend our streak," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We've got a great group of women who were able to continue the tradition. We tried to set up two packs today, Liz was controlling that first pack and tried to keep them together the best she could. We went up against a tremendous Lafayette runner Stephanie Benko and Ingrid (Simon) did a great job running her down."
With exception to third place, Lehigh filled every finish in the top 14. Behind Weiler, senior Ingrid Simon finished her first race of the season with a time of 21:57. Behind Simon and Weiler, six Mountain Hawks ran personal best times, including sophomore Ashley Strysko (22:31), freshman Sarah Spring (22:35), senior Shannon Wright (22:38), freshman Laura Barnes (23:01), freshman Samantha Lerner (23:20) and freshman Jennifer Burke (24:13).
"Our goals were slightly shifted this race," said Simon. "We were more focused on finishing as a team instead of just winning the race, so it was really nice to see everyone finish in one large pack. My only goal was coming in under 22 minutes and feeling really strongly during the race, so I was really happy about that."
The Mountain Hawks will be back in action when they compete at the Roy Griak Invitational on September 27 in Minneapolis, Minn.
