MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Lehigh women's cross country team finished the Jack Johnson Women's Gold race at the Roy Griak Invitational in 26th place on Saturday by the strength of junior Elizabeth Weiler. In a field of 390 runners, Weiler ran an outstanding 6K and finished in 17th place overall against stiff competition. The junior recorded a time of 21:44 finishing amidst some of the best runners in the country.
"Elizabeth had a tremendous performance," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "This was her coming out party, she's letting everybody know that she is a threat in the Patriot League and in our region. She's gaining a ton a confidence going into Paul Short and other big races such as the Patriot League Championships and NCAA Regionals."
Lehigh went up against 34 teams, ten of which are currently nationally ranked and six of which competed in the NCAA championships last year. Senior Ingrid Simon helped Lehigh's 26th place finish by placing 117th overall (23:26), along with Amanda Ruschel finishing 169th (24:11), and Ashley Strysko finishing 183rd (24:20).
"We're definitely a little disappointed with the team finish," said Utesch. "We went out a little to conservatively, but what we're going to take away is that this was our first big race experience of the year, it taught us how to compete with traveling, tough weather conditions, and sickness on the team. This experience will be invaluable to us going into Paul Short and Patriot Leagues, now we know what to do to accomplish our goals at the end of the season."
The Roy Griak Invitational individual champion was senior Shelby Houlihan of Arizona State, running the 6K at a time of 20:35, and the overall team champions were the Spartans of Michigan State, having four of their runners finish in the top 20.
The Mountain Hawks will take the experience they gained at the Roy Griak Invitational and put it towards their next big meet, the Paul Short Run, which will be held at the Goodman Campus cross country course on October 4. The women's gold 6K is set to take off at 11:45 a.m.
