BETHLEHEM, Pa – The Lehigh women's cross country teams prepare to host the 41st annual Paul Short Run, presented by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports this Saturday. The Paul Short Run is one of the largest cross country meets in the nation with more than 5,500 runners from over 400 teams competing at the all-day event. The day will kick off at 10 a.m. with the women's open race and end at 5:45 p.m. with the girl's high school JV race.

The Lehigh women's cross country team finished last year's Paul Short Run in 26th place in a large pool of competitors, averaging a time of 22:18 in the Women's Gold 6k. The day was highlighted by a top performance from senior Ingrid Simon who came in 102nd running a time of 21:53 which was a personal best for the junior at the time.

"Paul Short is always a great opportunity to showcase what Lehigh has to offer athletically in the sport of cross country," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "It's the first time we'll see a lot of other Patriot League teams so it'll be nice to see how we stack up against them and some of the other teams in the region. There will also be a number of nationally ranked programs represented on the women's side, so they should really set the tone up front and make it a pretty fast race for us."

Junior Elizabeth Weiler finished behind Simon in last year's Paul Short Run with a time 22:10 finishing in 138th place. Recently, Weiler has made a statement this year, finishing in first in both the Lehigh Invitational and Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet, earning her two Patriot League Runner of the Week awards. The junior also put out an outstanding performance last week at the Roy Griak Invitational, finishing in 17th place out of 390 runners with a 6K time of 21:44.

"Weiler's race at Griak really showed that she is moving into being able to race with some of those upper echelon competitors," said Utesch. "This is a chance for her to repeat that level of performance, it's a quick turn around with back to back national level competitions, but at this meet particularly she'll see more of those top regional performers which is what she's going to have be looking for later in the season if she's looking to qualify for NCAA's"

Lehigh has seen outstanding performances from Mountain Hawks such as senior Ingrid Simon who finished the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet in second place with a time of 21:57, and also from senior Shannon Wright who ran back to back personal best times in the Lehigh Invitational and the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet. Freshman Sarah Spring has also had top performances, her best being the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet, running a 22:35 6K which earned her Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors.

The Lehigh women's cross country team enters the Paul Short Run ranking tenth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
