BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team finished in second place at the Lehigh Invitational on Friday evening on the Goodman Campus. Junior Elizabeth Weiler won the women's individual title running the 6K in 21:35.58. The Mountain Hawks also placed eight runners in the top 20.
"The freshmen did a tremendous job," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "Getting their first collegiate races off their backs is always a good thing. We had a nice pack, we had six runners within about 12 seconds from each other which is what we're going to be looking for from everyone the rest of the season."
Behind Weiler, sophomore Marissa Karl (22:59.47) finished next for Lehigh in eighth place. The Mountain Hawks kept a tight pack after Karl with junior Arielle Weiner (23:12.26), freshman Laura Barnes (23:17.71), junior Carlie Skellington (23:19.78), freshman Samantha Lerner (23:22.06) and freshman Sarah Spring (23:24.14).
After a fantastic finish, coach Utesch has big plans for Weiler this year.
"Liz obviously ran a fantastic race," said Utesch. "She looked comfortable with 700 meters to go and had a tremendous finish. This will really set the tone for her to establish herself as one of the top returners in the Patriot League and one of the top returners in the region."
"I really didn't have a set plan," said Weiler. "We talked about the first mile of the race, to run a six-minute mile and feel our way after that point. Once I got to the top of the group I felt pretty relaxed, but once we had 1200 meters to go we started to pick it up and I really started pressing and picking up the pace."
West Virginia took home the title in the Brown race with a total of 24 points while second place was earned by Lehigh with 45 points and Delaware earned third place with 55 points. Moravian came in first in the White results race with 49 points, Scranton in second with 62, Muhlenberg in third with 63 points, DeSales in fourth with 76 points and Ursinus in fifth with95 points.
Next up for the Mountain Hawks will be the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet at home on September 13.
