2014 Schedule
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Dean Koski announced the 2014 men's soccer schedule Monday as the Mountain Hawks aim to return to the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks will face last season's top two Patriot League teams at home following a tough non-league slate that includes a trip to 2013 national finalist Maryland. Lehigh opens its season at the Ulrich Sports Complex at 7 p.m. on August 29 against Manhattan.
Following the season opener against Manhattan, the Mountain Hawks will hit the road for four-straight away games beginning with a contest at Monmouth on September 1. Following a September 6 match at Stony Brook, Lehigh heads to Rhode Island for a pair of games against the University of Rhode Island and Brown.
"We have four away games against very good teams after our first home game," said Koski. "We certainly have our work cut out for us early on in the season and it's a good opportunity for us to see how we compete on the road."
Lehigh returns to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday September 19 to host Stetson for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Hatters head coach Logan Fleck is the son of former Lehigh coach Dr. Tom Fleck, who guided Lehigh to an overall record of 57-52-10 from 1969-77. Dr. Fleck passed away last year and the Mountain Hawks plan to present Logan Fleck with a commemorative plaque.
"We're very excited about having Stetson come up here," said Koski. "We plan to honor Logan Fleck's father who passed away last year. It's a really neat opportunity for us."
The Mountain Hawks will have their final pre-Patriot League tune-up when Lehigh hosts Villanova on September 23 at 7 p.m.
"We have seven matches before we see our first league opponent at the end of September, so we hope to have everything figured out by then," said Koski. "We have a really tough stretch early on so we have to come in ready."
Lehigh kicks off Patriot League play on Saturday September 27 against American. The Mountain Hawks will then travel to Bucknell a week later before heading to Easton to face archrival Lafayette on October 8. Lehigh leads the all-time series against the Leopards, 54-45-10, but will be looking for its first win against Lafayette since 2010.
The Mountain Hawks welcome Boston University on October 11 at 7 p.m. Lehigh will then head to Maryland to face the Terrapins on Wednesday October 15 in a non-league matchup. Maryland finished the 2013 season ranked second in the nation after losing the national title game to Notre Dame, 2-1. Following a trip to league foe Loyola on October 18, the Mountain Hawks play their final non-league game on October 21 when Fairleigh Dickinson travels to Bethlehem.
"Villanova, Maryland and Fairleigh Dickinson are all top teams that we're excited about playing," said Koski. "Make no mistake; they're some of the best teams that we'll see outside of the league. It's a tough non-league schedule, but a good non-league schedule for us."
The Mountain Hawks remain home to host 2013 league runner-up Army on October 25 before welcoming 2013 Patriot League Champion Navy on October 29. The Mids went undefeated in league play during the 2013 season and finished the year ranked 25th in the nation.
"Home games in the league always help," said Koski. "You have to try to win your home games because that gives you the best chance of getting into postseason play. But we also have to win our share on the road, too."
The Mountain Hawks head to Colgate on November 1 before traveling to Holy Cross on November 8 to close out the regular season.
The Patriot League Quarterfinals are set for Tuesday November 11. The top two seeds receive byes while the No. 3 seed hosts No. 6 and No. 4 hosts No. 5. The four teams still standing will play in the semifinals and finals at the top overall seed the weekend of November 14-16.
The Mountain Hawks look to bounce back after a 2-14-1 season. Lehigh returns 80 percent of its offense from last season in addition to 2011 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Ciaran Nugent who was sidelined with an injury during the 2013 campaign.
