PHILADELPHIA - Lehigh's Men's Varsity Eight reached the petite finals on Saturday to highlight a strong weekend for the Mountain Hawks at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. Three crews competed in the semifinals (also the Women's Varsity Eight and Men's Freshmen Eight).
"I think all the crews raced well," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "They raised the bar, but the Men's Varsity Eight was definitely the one that took the team to a whole new level. Making the finals at Dad Vails is impressive and marks great improvement for the team.
"It came from great leadership to understand what they needed to do," Conley continued. "They went out today and they did out. Today didn't happen today; it happened several months beforehand. That's how they got themselves into the petite final today."
The Men's Varsity Eight came in third in the semifinals, finishing in 6:04.59. They then finished fifth in the petite finals with a time of 5:59.32. The Men's Freshmen Eight placed fourth (6:28.95) while the Women's Varsity Eight came in sixth (7:05.44).
Saturday marked the final action of the season for the men's team. The women will compete in the Patriot League Championships next Friday (May 16) on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts.
"I think the men had a really solid year," said Conley. "They stepped up in a lot of areas. It started at the top this year, which is great. We've had a lot of strong freshmen come in, but this year, we had the upperclassmen step up and show the freshmen how things are done."
Despite fewer boats reaching the Dad Vail semifinals than last year, this weekend still marked a big step forward for the program.
"We competed well in these semifinals, which is a huge step forward for us," said Conley. "We can only take positives out of this weekend and continue to improve as a program."
The women's squad is excited to see what it can do at the league championships next weekend.
"I think the women are chomping at the bit to get to Patriots," said Conley. "They want to see what they can do and I think they're excited to show it."
