EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team captured a 107-96 win over rival Lafayette Saturday afternoon at the Leopards' Metzgar Athletic Fields. With the win, the Mountain Hawks completed the season sweep of Lafayette following a victory in the indoor dual meet in February.
"These duals meets help us because they're meets where we need to score points, so different athletes need to step into different events and do just that," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We had a lot of people do that today."
Senior Brooke Astor picked up four individual event victories, highlighted by an ECAC qualifying and new personal best mark of 5.84 in the long jump. The senior sprinted her way to a first place finish in the 100 meter dash (12.20) and 100 meter hurdles (14.35) before picking up another win in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 1:06.05.
"Brooke is really something special," said Utesch. "She stepped up to run the 100 today, which she's never done before, and did a great job."
Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler claimed first place in both the 1500 meter (4:51.31) and 5000 meter (18:41.34) runs. Senior Jessica Kendzor picked up a win in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:20.56. Junior Victoria Mullane (2:23.39) and freshman Amanda Ruschel (2:27.18) finished right behind Kendzor in second and third, respectively.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Kendzor, senior Danielle Albergo and freshmen Kaitlyn Ruffing and Lindsay Voltz beat out Lafayette's relay team with a time of 4:10.62.
Freshman Courtney Avery claimed the high jump title with a leap of 1.65m and was followed by sophomore Gabrielle Wardle in second with a mark of 1.60m. Junior Serenah Polite finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.21m.
The Mountain Hawks will send athletes to Moravian's Coach Pollard Invitational and Bucknell's Bison Classic next Friday and Saturday.
