Mountain Hawks drop 7-5 final at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Despite jumping out to a 4-1 halftime advantage, Fairfield responded in the second half to down the Lehigh women's lacrosse team 7-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Carli Sukonik and freshman Allison LaBeau led the offense with two goals apiece. The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they host Bucknell in the Patriot League opener Saturday.

"We played a terrific first half, but we didn't sustain it in the second half," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "We made some critical errors and Fairfield capitalized."

LaBeau added two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Kendall Garden scored Lehigh's fifth goal. Freshman Krista Dampman posted two groundballs and two caused turnovers while junior Kelly Scott caused a pair of caused turnovers as well.

Senior Alexandra Fitzpatrick made five saves between the pipes.

LaBeau opened the scoring at 20:49 of the first half, then after a Fairfield goal, Lehigh answered with the final three of the opening stanza. LaBeau scored her second in a 3:21 span to make it 2-1 at 17:28 before Sukonik added her first just two minutes later. Sukonik beat the first-half horn and made it 4-1 with just one second on the clock.

Fairfield opened the second half with two straight goals before Garden made it 5-3 Mountain Hawks at 20:22. However, the Stags ended the game with four in a row, pulling within one at 17:23 then tying the score at the 13:41 mark. Fairfield took a 6-5 lead with just over nine minutes remaining and added an insurance tally for the 7-5 final.

The Stags held a 16-8 edge in shots and 9-4 in draw controls while groundballs were tied at 14.

The Mountain Hawks return home to host Bucknell on Saturday in their Patriot League opener. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
