Four finalists, silver medal highlight Lehigh’s effort at Murphy Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - Three crews made the grand finals and another advanced to the petite finals as the Lehigh rowing team wrapped up a successful Saturday at the Murphy Cup. Men's Freshmen Eight captured silver in the grand finals while Men's Freshmen Four and Men's Varsity Eight also reached the finals. Women's Varsity Eight also had a strong effort, finishing second in the petite finals.
"I thought it was a great day of racing for us," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "We had some challenges in terms of conditions and some other things, but we overcame them and had some pretty good results for what we were trying to do."
Men's Freshmen Eight placed third in its morning heat, coming in at 7:07.67. Then in the afternoon's finals, the crew came in second with a time of 7:31.40. Men's Freshmen Four finished in second in the morning (8:21.68) before narrowly missing a medal by placing fourth in the finals (8:42.07). Men's Varsity Eight was second in its heat (7:21.68) and also advanced to the grand finals.
On the women's side, the Varsity Eight highlighted the day, coming in fourth (8:26.74) to reach the petite finals where it took second (8:17.27).
"Men's Varsity Eight had a last minute lineup shift and still overcame that to make the grand final which was a big step forward for them," said Conley. "Women's Varsity Eight came back from a tough first race to finish eighth overall. Men's Freshmen Eight changed how they raced to be more aggressive throughout the race course."
Lehigh will return to action in less than 24 hours as the Mountain Hawks head to New Rochelle, N.Y. to face Iona, Robert Morris and Marist on Sunday.
"Today's racing gave the team's confidence a boost in all the hard training they've done throughout the year," said Conley.
