BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a tightly contested battle, the Lehigh women's tennis team snapped its two match slide with a 4-3 victory over Villanova Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks won the doubles point in a tiebreak at the No. 2 flight and won three singles matches, with freshman Jamie Campisi persevering in a three-set match at the No. 5 flight to clinch the victory as Lehigh improves to 3-6 on the season.
Campisi and classmate Jess Graham gave Lehigh a strong start in doubles with an 8-1 win over Samantha Schafer and Kate Pettee at the No. 3 flight. Villanova took the top flight as Mikelle Mancini and Tori Smyth downed senior Taylor Hampshire and freshman Cassidy Cruz, meaning the match at No. 2 doubles between senior Jenai Bilimoria and junior Abby Farrell and Villanova's Linley Busby and Connor Brewer would decide the doubles point. A tiebreak was needed, in which the Lehigh duo prevailed 8-6 to win the match 8-7 and give the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
Farrell returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's loss against Temple and extended Lehigh's lead to 2-0 with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Smyth at the No. 3 flight. Cruz put Lehigh up 3-0 with a straight set win over Samantha Schafer at No. 2 singles before Villanova battled back.
The Wildcats got a straight set win from Busby over Graham at No. 4 singles while Mancini outlasted Bilimoria in a third set tiebreak at the top flight.
With Lehigh needing one more point to clinch the match, Campisi won her first set versus Brewer at the No. 5 flight, but lost the second in a tiebreak. Campisi came out strong in the deciding third set and clinched the match for Lehigh with a 6-2 victory. Villanova took the final match as Pettee beat sophomore Ali Kaminetsky 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles.
The Mountain Hawks will next host Niagara Sunday at 10 a.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
