Lehigh returns from layoff with 6-1 home loss to Temple

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Cassidy Cruz posted wins in both doubles and singles to lead Lehigh in its first match following a layoff of more than two weeks but the Mountain Hawks came up on the short end of a 6-1 score against Temple Tuesday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The visiting Owls won two doubles matches and five of six singles matches to improve to 4-7 while dropping Lehigh to 2-6.
With junior Abby Farrell out of the lineup Tuesday, Lehigh head coach Dave Shook bumped Cruz and senior Taylor Hampshire to the top doubles spot where they responded with an 8-3 win over Mariana Bedon and Minami Okajima. Temple won 8-2 at the No. 2 flight as the doubles point came down to the third flight. The Owls' Yana Mavrina and Alicia Doms edged freshmen Jess Graham and Jamie Campisi 8-6 to clinch the doubles point.
Singles play begain with Temple's Anais Nussaume blanking senior Jill Sloand at the No. 6 flight. Doms downed Bilimoria in straight sets at No. 1 singles and Dina Karina took down Graham at the No. 3 flight to clinch the match for the visitors. The Owls also posted straight set wins at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles flights but Cruz salvaged a point for Lehigh winning a ten point super tiebreak to defeat Mavrina at the No. 2 flight. Cruz won the first set 6-4 but lost the second in a tiebreak before winning the super tiebreak 10-6.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their home stand this weekend when they host Villanova Saturday at 2 p.m. and Niagara Sunday at 10 a.m.
