Strong effort leads Lehigh past UNH, 9-5

3/1/2014 6:45:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

DURHAM, N.H. - Junior Carli Sukonik and freshman Krista Dampman each scored four goals to lead the offense while sophomore Kendall Garden caused four turnovers and senior Alexandra Fitzpatrick stopped nine-of-14 shots to lead the Lehigh women's lacrosse team to an impressive 9-5 win at New Hampshire on Saturday. The Wildcats took a 3-2 first-half lead, but the Mountain Hawks outscored them 7-2 the rest of the way.

"Our team came ready to play today and put together 60 minutes of hard-nose lacrosse," said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern. "Alex was a difference maker in the cage and Kendall had another outstanding performance. Carli and Krista also had standout performances for us today."

Garden added a career-high five groundballs to go with her four caused turnovers (which tied a career high, originally set on Tuesday vs. Binghamton). Garden scored a goal and dished two assists as just three Mountain Hawks posted a point on Saturday.

Sukonik got the scoring started then after a UNH goal, Dampman made it 2-1 at 21:35 of the first half. The Wildcats reeled off two straight, but Lehigh answered with six in a row bridging the end of the first half and beginning of the second.  Garden's goal at 23:18 of the second half made it 8-3 Mountain Hawks.

UNH broke a 33:39 scoreless drought and scored two straight to pull within 8-5 with 7:17 remaining, but that's as close as the Wildcats would get. Dampman rounded out the scoring with 28 seconds on the clock, good for the 9-5 final.

The Wildcats held a 15-12 edge in shots and 21-16 advantage in groundballs. Lehigh had nine draw controls to New Hampshire's seven. Fitzpatrick's nine saves came across Taylor Hurwitz who made three.

Lehigh was scheduled to play at Fairfield on Monday, but that game has been postponed due to the expected snowstorm. The game will now be played on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
