BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a pair of road games, the Lehigh men's basketball team returns home for three of its next four, beginning with a Saturday afternoon showdown with Loyola. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Stabler Arena. Lehigh and Loyola enter tied for fifth in the league standings with 5-6 records. The Greyhounds captured a slim 72-68 victory in the first meeting between the teams in January.
Â
Senior Mackey McKnight led the way on Wednesday, scoring 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while adding six rebounds, five assists and three steals. In the process, he moved from 20th to 18th in school history with 1,236 career points, surpassing Austen Rowland and Norm Brandl.
Â
The Mountain Hawks struggled offensively, shooting just 28 percent in the first half (7-of-28). Lehigh responded to shoot 43 percent in the second (12-of-28), trimming a 17-point halftime deficit down to eight early, but was unable to pull any closer. The loss snapped Lehigh's four-game winning streak as the Mountain Hawks fell for the first time since Jan. 18 at Holy Cross (also a 19-point loss). The Mountain Hawks close the regular season with four of their final seven games at home. They're in a three-way tie (with Loyola and Bucknell) for fifth place, owning identical 5-6 league records. Lehigh is two games behind fourth-place Holy Cross for all-important home court advantage in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.
Â
Freshman Tim Kempton scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half Wednesday while adding eight rebounds as well. Sophomore Jesse Chuku scored six points and added seven boards while junior Corey Schaefer had five, knocking down his only three-pointer of the evening.
Â
Despite trailing for the game's final 35:19, the Mountain Hawks never gave up. It took Lehigh just 6:32 to trim a 17-point halftime deficit down to eight, but Army responded to go up 18 (58-40). It took the Mountain Hawks just 1:11 to pull right back within 10 as two Chuku free throws and treys from McKnight and Schaefer made it 58-48 with 5:30 still remaining.
Â
Loyola enters coming off an impressive 62-58 win over previously 10-0 American. The Greyhounds led by two at the half and held on for their seventh home victory of the season. Loyola is just 3-9 on the road. Tyler Hubbard led the way on Wednesday with 20 points. The Patriot League's leading scorer Dylon Cormier didn't play against the Eagles and is out indefinitely after suffering a hand injury; he is averaging 21.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Jarred Jones averages 8.3 points and 4.2 boards while R.J. Williams comes in at 8.0 points and 2.7 rebounds. Prior to Wednesday's win, the Greyhounds had lost four of their previous five games, with the lone win coming against Colgate.
Â
The all-time series with Loyola is tied at five. The sides met in January for the first time since Nov. 26, 1988, an 86-72 Lehigh victory. The Greyhounds won this year's meeting, 72-68. The teams first played in 1912-13, a 41-19 Lehigh win. Loyola's first win came in 1915-16 by a 35-15 final. The last time Loyola played at Lehigh was on Jan. 21, 1978, a 79-64 Greyhounds victory.
Â
The Mountain Hawks hit the road again when they travel to American next Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. Lehigh returns home next Saturday (Feb. 15) to host Holy Cross at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263).
